BJ had some big time plays tonight, and Patterson saw significantly more PT than Joseph. Both are seen as possible transfer candidates, with an eye towards opening up a spot for Bryant. If either one of them wanted to transfer that's one thing, but JB seems to think they deserve to be on the court. Hope they're both around for next year, though it's not clear to me how we have an available scholarship for Bryant unless one of them does leave (or G leaves, but I see that as a less likely scenario).

Yeah, but the inn being full is still a problem. It's going to end in one of two ways, and people will be pissed.

Scenario 1: Bryant goes elsewhere. People get pissed at missing on a highly thought of recruit. This anger will likely be directed at some current player (My bet being McCullough for not being one and done)

Scenario 2: Bryant does come here. Boeheim forces someone out (I really don't see anyone on the team wanting to transfer or leave willingly). People get livid.

I say no one leaves willingly in #2 because no, G, Cooney, or anyone else is not going pro, Europe or otherwise. I just don't see it.

Why do we have all these transfer threads? I don't want any of our guys to transfer ... unless they want to transfer (or want to leave early). I don't want to "force out" one of our guys ... just to get a one-and-done kid ... who may or may not live up to his high school clippings on the college level. Loyalty is a two-way street.

I wouldn't be shocked if McCoullough still leaves school after this season.

And then when Bryant comes here and isn't the savior he is purported to be (because, well...they just seldom ever are) then we look at the guy who transferred out as a loss that could have really helped the team...and then we look to the next shiny new toy we want and the cycle begins again.

jb discovered the bench that most people on the board knew was there in the first place.

I agree. I know McCullough got his surgery in NYC. Is he back on campus taking classes? Haven't seen him on the bench In a while (but I have been having to watch on ESPN3 so might have missed him).

I know Chino already sat out a year (and lost a year of eligibility barring a reversal), but is there any chance he redshirts? Seems like we are or will recruit over him. I know JB would never take away a scholarship, but does anyone think Chino might want to go somewhere where he could have more of an impact, even if means sitting out again? From what I understand, he's a good kid and does well academically, so I'd be sad to see him go and certainly wouldn't want him (or anyone) forced out.

IMO, we have these transfer threads because people are trying to figure out how we're supposed to fit all the current and projected players on one team. JB has indicated that there will somehow be room for Bryant, and there have been a lot of sentiments expressed along the lines of 'it'll work itself out'...meaning someone leaves to open up a spot. Neither BJ nor Buss has been given much PT throughout the season (though that's been changing the past few games) and with new talent coming in, next year's squad would seem to offer them even less, so there's naturally been an assumption that they might chose to play elsewhere.

As I said in my post, I definitely don't want BJ or Buss to transfer, and really I don't want anyone to transfer because as soon as any one of these kids commits to SU I feel like they're OUR GUYS and we owe them our support. So this is not about taking a shot at current players and wanting them to be forced out. In fact, part of the reason I posted about this is that I was feeling really proud of both BJ and Buss after last night's game. Seeing how both players are really improving and earning JB's trust just made me think it would be terrible if we lost either one.

Much rather a sophomore McCullough than forcing a transfer/etc. to make room for Thomas Bryant.

Bryant is the hero we deserve, but not the hero we need.

Agreed, CTO--I don't want anybody forced out. However, I DO expect that JB will have frank discussions with the entire team this offseason, and that at least one player won't like what he has to say about the prospects for future PT. I think it is also possible that one of two players on the team [or both] opts to head to greener pastures for more abundant PT and opportunities to have a larger offensive role.

I think it is extremely unlikely that attrition would come from either Michael Gbinije opting to go pro [as has been suggested in other threads] or that McCullough would declare for the NBA. The latter is an extreme possibility if some of the earlier season NBA forecasting is to be believed [and it is generally unreliable info], but would qualify as a bonehead move on the kid's part coming off of an catastrophic ACL injury.

Do we know whether loss of scholarships is on the table for alleged NCAA violations? If so, would that only include prospective scholarship players (would current students be grandfathered in, but lose scholarships for new players?). It would seem quite inequitable to have to kick people off of a team for the academic violations of players from years past.

This is a key question to be answered, anyone got anything?

Option 3: someone pays for a year on their own and walks on to the team

Yup, definitely a lot of different ways a scholarship could open up. This option seems less likely, but who knows? If a current scholarship player did decide to walk-on next year, let's just hope it's someone with a decent GPA, since we'd be losing one of our normal walk-ons, who generally help pull our team GPA up (or so I've heard).

BJ made himself more attractive to other schools over the last few games.

I don't want to chase him away, but does he want to play next year?

If G returns, BJ is a seldom used backup.

You are absolutely right, the people on this board should be making the rotation, not the guys who see what happens at practice everyday.

Not so sure about that. There are ways to get them on the court together-especially if BJ continues to improve on the defensive end.

I dont know its complicated. Imo here are the guys who will compete for mins at the 3 next year: G, TRob, BJ and Malachi. That is very crowded. But G and or Malachi might end up starting at one of the guard positions next year instead of Kaleb. Also JB has said TRob is a 4 so maybe he and McC split time at the 4, ie the other frwd spot. BJ could wind up getting a lot of time at the 3 next year. Who knows but its nice to have options

First these aren't the typical idle - so and so isn't happy with his playing time he should transfer threads. We have all of these transfer threads because we all know that if everyone that is currently on the roster and has remaining eligibility returns and all of the committed recruits arrive safely on campus we will have used all of our available scholarships for next year. We also know that Bryant still remains interested for next year and JB has said things that have lead most of us here to believe he is still hot on Bryant and believes that having a scholarship available for him will not be an issue.

Hence where that scholarship will come from has become one of the more interesting questions for many. Unlike many of the other things we speculate on in these forums (e.g. would less PT be beneficial or detrimental to Trevor, zone v. man I; zone v. man II, Man v. Zone etc.) this question will eventually be answered, but who has the patience to wait to find out the answer.

Exactly. And in the presser last night, JB talked quite a bit about practice performance.
