I don’t know about you, but I wasn’t making six figures, or near, at 22 to play a sport. I find these acts very hard to defend. Just because he’s getting paid more doesn’t mean he’s in the right. Get paid, get criticism.

With 2 of the 2024 Captains leaving (Wax and Barron), it would seem desirable to provide senior leadership during spring camp and summer workouts. Naming Pena a captain may also have been an attempt to dissuade portal rumors.

The whole thing is sad. If it was just a ploy to get more NIL$ from SU - I can’t imagine him thinking he could bluff and mess with Fran this way. Didn’t he really get anything from the entire DART program? The worst part was accepting being a captain, assuming team leadership while not telling his intentions before it and instead waiting till after the spring game. If it was just the result of a sudden hissy fit perhaps because he wasn’t targeted for a pass or the lure of a late NIL offer it’s probably better it all happened now than later.

Just like the hoops transfer portal it's money first and then playing time next. Pena was going to be on the field plenty and be paid well (not as much as the big dawg offers but enough).

However if Hixon's new offense is only going to target him half or a third as much then that's a problem for him when Sundays come. Also remember Fran was asking Pena to become an elite punt / kick returner which may have been a way to keep him involved as much as possible to help Special Teams but likely would've taken offensive reps which may have been a problem for Pena. *Good way to get Injured is taking every return rep with a special teams unit that has not been great...

People want to pretend it's schedule or deficiencies from people leaving last year. It's none of that crap. We're building the offense overall around what Rickie can do, not pretending like we have a replacement McCord or that Pena will put up the #'s he did last year.

There are obvious circumstances here that would cause some different emotions. Acting like this is the same as any other transfer situation feels pretty silly.

I bet Fran Brown would gladly welcome someone leaving another program under the same circumstance. Maybe I’m wrong.

-I think there's sound clips from Spring practice of Fran telling Pena he wants him to have 10 return TDs.
-No way we run an offense with Rickie passing the ball 60 times like McCord did. Even if Pena is target #1 and gets the vast majority of catches he would still have half as many catches as last year

Team captains/top returning players on their team? Who left in the middle of spring ball instead of right after the season like everyone else? Would not say that describes many of our transfers. We can be mad about this. It is fine. We are a program trying to claw our way into a higher tier. Can't lose a guy like this at this time of year. It is crap.

Feel free to be mad about it, but I’ll stand by the point that we really only care about loyalty to Syracuse.

Yeah, this is what I'm talking about about. I don't think the NIL agents are super seasoned professionals. They're probably hungry and see an opportunity, but not all that experienced. Are there any professional standards for NIL agents or anything?
