Trebor Pena transferring to PSU

Another side of why the spring transfer portal sucks.

Imagine being Ricky right now. I'm sure the dude is tough as nails but, shortly after he works hard and earns the starting job, he goes straight from seeing some rather public blame he doesn't deserve to talk about how someone might swoop in and steal the job he earned. Oof.

I agree with this.
I've seen this happen to kids in Middle school and High School sports. He's still getting paid right at least. He's still the presumptive starter unless he's not good enough.

He’s looking for a bag and going to visit anyone that will give him a cup of coffee. I think the 2 million dollar offer was a bluff and Fran called him out. If he had that offer he would have signed already. Hes going to be wr3/4 at any of these schools. Grass isn’t greener and pena is going to learn this the hard way.
Let's not forget Fran is also used to working with real agents and know's who's legit and who's not from his time in the SEC. He knows who Penas agent is I'm sure given it's been reported that he's a noob walking around campus and prob thinks he's a joke.

I'm also quite sure Fran made a call way back to other agents or contacts he has in the SEC to find out exactly what Pena is really worth on the market.

Well it looks like he wants to live in the warm weather.
Lets see him unite with Iamalaeva at UCLA- as they both dumped their teams for the hope of more money.
I just do not see ucla coming in with big money. USC sure. I know ucla has big donors but I do not see them throwing it at nil.

If hes good he shouldnt be worried about losing the starting job no
If Ricky is good enough why would he worry. Angeli could be the most important pick up we make if he upgrades the most important position in the game.
Eh not that he’d be worried per se, I am confident he’s the real deal. But so is a high probability recruit of approximately similar “OVR” with a closer fit to the previous gunslinger system, which Pena ostensibly had some sort of issue over. If nothing else it’s awkward timing.

Blame? For what?
Maybe blame isnt the right word, but for Pena leaving. The talk of Penas numbers under Ricky taking a hit and all that. It’s not everywhere, I just think it’s not really fair to the dude the way this is developing, that’s all.

Idk man, he could also flip the script and let him come back; "see everyone the grass isn't always greener".

Yeah I think Pena could come back from this. *But* he would have to seriously align some stars and no way he’d get a C on his jersey.

I agree. But as we’ve seen from pro sports teams over the years, a fan desire to win isn’t always the top priority for a club.

The perpetual bankroll is the thing I’m most interested to see play out. It’s one thing to ask for a big time booster to throw a bunch of money at a one time facility build. It’s quite another to ask said booster for 7 figures a year in perpetuity.
That's where college and pro football differ. Pro owners make money whether they win or lose. Even if they lose on the field, the can be happy to win in the bank. It's 100% their money.
Boosters want their team to win if they aren't getting a monetary return.

I agree on the booster front. Even the most deep-pocketed ones will turn off the money faucet if they don't like the coach and/or aren't getting wins.

However, the escalation in media rights money means a lot of schools are content to cash checks and win occasionally. Schools in the B1G and SEC are nearing $60 million in annual payouts. And with the looming CFP changes they'll add to that tally. If you're a, say, Minnesota, you can get pretty comfortable cashing $75-80 million annual checks and trying mostly to avoid being a basement dweller.

The Miami Herald is reporting that although he is going to visit UCLA and The U, he is leaning Penn St.

Yeah everything I’ve heard is that this is Penn States to lose at this point

According to 247, he has now dropped to the 4th-ranked WR still in the portal:

I'd happily swap him out for this guy:

3. Ted Hurst, WR, Georgia State:

"Ted Hurst in the portal after announcing in December intentions to return to Georgia State. That only lasted through spring practice, however, and now, Hurst is the second highest-rated wideout available behind Hudson. Hurst led Georgia State with 961 yards and nine touchdowns in his first season in Atlanta after transferring in from Division 2 Valdosta State. The All-Sun Belt Second Teamer will likely sign with a Power 4 program given his impressive numbers."

Fran clarified a lot in the Jim Rome interview about Peña. UDFA’s earn $800k. Fran basically said why is he going to pay someone more than that who may not even stay on as a UDFA (not in those exact words). Also said he was worrying about Collins (again, not in so many words, but that was what he was inferring).

Totally makes sense. I’m guessing he was getting $500k which is more than enough . I wouldn’t have paid more.

The same article lists our former cb Jeremiah Wilson as the 4th best uncommitted player overall currently in the portal.

I loved the way this kid played. Coaches said him and LeQuint had the same motor at practice. Everything i heard was that they really like him. Not sure what ultimately happened but i thought he was our best corner and never understood the hate that he got. Maybe a little too much celebrating but at least he’s into the game.

Also, Micah Hudson is going back to Texas Tech, so he’d still be 3rd WR

He said the 800k number for a reason. Just like he mentioned $2m originally.

In reality, if UDFAs make $800K,then schools should not exceed that amount with few exceptions. If the player is better off jumping to the pros, then the player should jump. Paying a player $MMs should be rare and limited.

This makes Pena's demand for $2MM and Nico Iamaleava's demand for $4MM ridiculous.

I think hoops is even worse

The $2mm number was always a bunch of nonsense. That was never being realized.
