Oddly, after one of his uglier performance I think I am buying in to him on this team. Fact is, we can not score. Our offense consists of Rak post moves (which work) and everyone else shooting and missing. Rebounding has been our best friend this year. Roberson has a knack to get the ball, and to a lesser degree so do Chris and Rak. Chris can rebound well, he just sucks at rotations.

That said, let Trevor chuck away. Let him be Allen Iverson for all i care. 6 for 25 or whatever he was is comical more than sad. But at least he has confidence now. He will have a game or two where he goes 15 for 25 and we upset a good team. Thats our only real shot to make the Big Dance.

We have a bad resume right now and we will surely lose a couple we shouldnt. So I say let em fly Trevor. There is a 50/50 chance we will get the rebound anyways if he misses. And just maybe a couple of those 15 for 25 games will come vs. Duke or Virginia.

Cooney will be fine its some of the others I worry about. Still there were a couple I would have liked him to pass on Saturday and he surely has been as aggressive (by design) looking for his shot the last 3 as he ever has. I will also say I thought he deserved 2-3 trips to the line on his drives where he created contact and was not rewarded. He has to shoot regardless this season especially if the defense sells out on Rakeem. 25 is however a handful more than I'd like.

Even when he doesn't bash Cooney, TBCuse still bashes Cooney.

Very shneaky!

This post isnt meant to be Trevor bashing. Seriously. He is not a sharp shooter, never will be. But he at least has the confidence to shoot now. 25 shots is alot for any college player, let alone someone like him... but on this team someone has to shoot. And its pretty clear that Ron and BJ cant shoot a lick in games.

Mike G has shown signs, but i dunno. Its gotta be Trevor or Rak shooting at least 50% of the possessions i think.

It's just a wonderful thing for all of us that you made this thread.

He's always been more than just a shooter and it's nice to see him being aggressive. No issues with Cooney's play.

Why start a new thread? Why don't recycle? Is this an obsession? I know his girl is good looking, but man...

I'm still sticking with Trevor and/or Mike taking their degrees and going after this year. I see a huge drop off in playing time for the both of them. If they are going to play professionally at any level this would be the year to go. I think JB is giving them the most playing time he can. Chris staying or going will have no influence on recruiting the Rochester kid.

First, it was 21 not 25, but I'm sure you were just rounding. Second, he averages 11 shots per game. Although in sure he'll increase that.

Why would there be a huge drop off in playing time for either of them? JB trusts them and if you have JBs trust you're going to play.

List the sharp shooters (as you see it) in Syracuse history for me. I'm interested to see how current Cooney compares to them.

Whose going to take their PT?

I'd be surprised honestly. I'd be less surprised to hear DC2 is done for good or that one of the underclassmen transfers after this season. Mike is just coming into his game and both he and Trevor look to be the only returning proven shooters for next year. We bring in a lot of talent but its doubtful any of that talent will be considerably better than two five year senior players that know the system and the coach trusts. Could MR or FH be so good that they demand 25-20 minutes a game? Sure but I still think Trevor and Mike would get plenty of minutes.

Im not sure we have had many (if any) at SU, we dont recruit that way.

You could argue GMac i guess, maybe Southerland. Marius Janulis was a sniper.

i hope its 20+ every game. Im dead serious. Quantity over quality in this case. It works for good rebounding teams, which we might just be.

Cooney:

Worst season: 27%, 105 attempts
Best season: 38%, 240 attempts
Career: 35%, 436 attempts
*Current season: 36%, 91 attempts

GMac:

Worst season: 33%, 308 attempts
Best season: 39%, 270 attempts
Career: 35%, 1131 attempts

Southerland:

Worst season: 34%, 110 attempts (*I threw away his freshman season with 24 attempts)
Best season: 40%, 211 attempts
Career: 37%, 413 attempts

Janulis:

Worst season: 40%, 173 attempts (*I threw away his freshman season with 15 attempts)
Best season: 42%, 101 attempts
Career: 40%, 476 attempts

I don't feel like diving into their stats, but I'm surprised Rautins and Shumpert didn't get a mention.

GMac comparison: Cooney could turn into a volume 3pt shooter like GMac. It could hurt his %, make it better, or have no effect, so only time will tell. GMac was clearly the better shooter out of the gate, but Cooney has time to make up the space and his career % is on par with Gerry's. Cooney's best season is pretty similar to Gerry's best season.

Southerland comparison: Southerland had an amazing senior season, but he got off to a slow start much like Cooney did. Considering Cooney didn't get the opportunity to ease into shot attempts like Southerland did (didn't become an offensive option until Junior season), I'd personally give the edge to Cooney. I don't think he'll hit the 40% mark for a season, but he has the opportunity to be considerably better over the last 3 years of his career than Southerland was over his last 2 or 3.

Janulis comparison: Janulis was a monster from behind the arc. His attempts were limited and I don't know if the success was a matter of the times, but yes, he is statistically a better sharpshooter than probably anybody we've had.

Anybody who hits 9 threes in a game, is a sharpshooter in my book. 9 goes beyond the point of 'streaky', especially considering the entire body of work around it.

I should have probably included Rautins. Forgot about him. Stats are what they are, i wont dispute that... but the bottom line is i really believe 100% of SU fans would rather have any of the guys i named shooting a 3 over Trevor in a tough spot. GMac was also a point guard his last three years more or less, so he was obviously much more valuable.

but that wasnt the discussion.

Im sure Jason Kidd made 9 threes at least once in his life. That doesnt mean hes a sharp shooter. Sharp shooters do not go on 10-15 game slumps like Trevor has multiple times.

In a rough spot or big game you want Gerry that was his specialty! Brass balls and ice water. Career wise he had a lot of poor shooting games however. As mentioned he was a pretty good distributor to go with his shooter though.

Southerland was a great asset in that we could deploy him at the 4 and go small which really helped on offense. His shooting was good enough as a sophomore but it took the rest his game some time to round into form.

Janulis was basically a specialist that didn't offer a heck of a lot else. Not sure he would play much today just like Mookie Jones rarely got off the bench and he could really knock them down as well.

Rautins started very slowly but from an all around guard perspective in JB's system especially considering defense and leadership he perhaps offered as much if not more than any of our other shooters although he did turn it over his fair share.

What about Devendorfs #'s he had to be high 30's for his career?

Additional info; 68 non-3 pt shots, making about 41%. I would think that is a reasonable ratio of a 2 guard 57% threes, 43% two's

Any Syracuse basketball thread that includes a California Dreams reference is a winner in my book.

Surf dudes with attitudes
Kinda groovy

(Whatever happened to Reggie Theus... who played a basketball coach on Hang Time? Oh yeah...)

Devo is my favorite Cuse player ever, by a large margin. Not sure he was a great shooter though. My only point was that calling Trevor a sharp shooter was a little kind. Janulis in my eyes is the only one we have ever had. No, he might not play a ton these days... but maybe he would. Guys like him play all over the country and score alot.

GMac went on huge shooting slumps in his career.

I guess we're splitting hairs over the defition of a sharpshooter.
