After watching the FSU Clemson game. If I have to choose a qb of the future between devito and lawrence I’m going with devito. Tommy seems to have a quicker release and makes decisions much quicker. Trevor has more of that slower dungey release. Almost like a baseball pitcher.

TL had a good game, his passing was off, 20-37. What matters most is that he makes good decisions. Not exactly a difficult thing to do whe you are on the #2 team and surrounded by so much talent, but he is making the right choices and deserves credit for it. If TL was my QB, I would be content.

TD has a quicker release and I think he is every bit as accurate, possibly more accurate as ourt WR talent is not Clemson level...yet!. I like TD better. I also think Chance Aime is going to be good, too. I like having first world CFB problems.

What?
LOL...this is what we do...on the hoops board right now, they are comparing the coach’s kid, who has played in exactly one exhibition game in his entire career, to a three-year starter who graduated in 16 and went to two final fours and determining the coach’s kid is a better player.

Our specialty is extrapolating a really small sample size and calling it a population...

In fact, we don’t even bother subtracting one...

Don't get me wrong, TD could be excellent but we should pump the breaks on the hype. Let's see how he does when he is called on from the start.

So, next year? ;)

This is a fan board, we are allowed opinions.

Both QBs are in their respective first year of playing time.

Lawrence plays behind an NFL OL, throwing to NFL WRs with NFL backs.

Devito plays behind a CFB OL, throws to CFB WRs and has CFB backs.

Swap the two: Devito's numbers presumably improve and Lawrence' numbers presumably fall. Both are noted for accuracy, but lets be honest, Clemson receivers tend to have more separation, Syracuse receivers tend to give less of a window for the passer.

And yes, 20-37 is a bad day for Lawrence, check his stats. As noted, he was making the good choices, he had some bad throws. Especially early, he had open players but simply missed the opportunity.

Some people misinterpret failing to worship a player as utter disdain. (hyperbole) Not so, I like Sunshine and think he is well on his way to playing on Sundays. If my Giants could wait, I would not complain if they did, but they can't.

He had an off day today but he has an elite ceiling. You guys are welcome to say your guy is better than ours. I'm not going to stop you even though I politely disagree. He's played a small amount of football against the worst team in the conference. I'm just saying let's play the wait and see game before we annoint him.

That's not how we do it here.

I am on your side here but in fairness he played pretty well against FSU for a half too... 11/16 144 yards, 1 TD no INT plus a rushing TD

Is Devito better than Lawrence ... too early to tell. Lawrence is very good and I saw him play at Cartersville ... he was all but a folk hero down here but Devito is going to be special and has a comparable tool set as demonstrated in the Elite 11 ... Lawrence has superior talent to Devito to work with especially with the oline up front ... I will say that Lawrence didn't look otherworldly against us and when pressured by our ends he wasn't able to move the ball with the same impact. I would love to see Devito with the talent Lawrence has ... specifically in the front 5 and see how the numbers and opinions change. They have similar skill sets and I think Devito will surprise you with the throws he can make.

Trevor is also a true freshman. Both can be great. There's no rule against it. There's also a lot of pressure on Lawrence that Devito doesn't have.

Bryce has helped alleviate that to a degree ... as an aside Bryce is a frosh as well right and is putting up good numbers in clean up ... which further solidifies my stance that the supporting cast plays a very large role in giving Lawrence that added edge.

The kid is throwing the football in the low 60s and is getting the ball out to WR within a second on the sideline throws. Him and Tommy could be All Americans for sure.
At this point Lawerence has the ceiling of being a once in a generation QB, Timmy does not.

He's played fine. Talent certainly helps, but I've seen Lawrence make elite NFL throws constantly. He's pushing too much at times but once he settles in he'll be fine.

Good news is we'll have the next few years to have this debate.

Plus Lawrence is an exceptional athlete that stands 6'6" tall. With that said, we're lucky to have a gunslinger like TD in the program. His future is bright.

yet Lawrence beat out an entrenched senior starter who actually led the team to the playoff.

Devito can't even beat out an entrenched senior who has never been to a bowl game.

Of course, that could be a Dabo/Dino thing more than a commentary on the respective QB talent.

(for the record, I think it is unfair to compare a true freshman Lawrence with a redshirt freshman Devito. Lawrence was in high school not that long ago. Devito benefitted from a year running the scout team and getting adjusted to the speed and physicality of college defenses).
