True marketing genius by SU

This might be long so you've been warned...I'm not going to get into the uniform design, but SU missed a major opportunity today. I don't work in marketing/pr/advertising, but if this was about brand exposure, I'm confused about a number of things:

- If you want fans involved, why hold an event on a Wednesday afternoon at 2:45 and give people less than 24 hours notice? If this was about a guerilla marketing campaign, then it's a big flop. If you want to be consistent with a brand, why not have a 4:44 start time?
- The set-up at Destiny was amateur at best (seriously balloons?) If SU is trying to position themselves with this new look, then make a big splash. You have a ton of space in Destiny, so why not get mannequins showing 44 possible uni combinations (again branding). Keep the display open for a couple of weeks (school breaks are going on now and next week), staff it with people to sell tickets, have former players/coaches make appearances, get sponsors involved for giveaways and really make it an event.
- An unveiling in NYC is different, but instead of faceless stand-ins, why not get Nassib/Pugh to appear at Nike NYC for this. Give the NYC media a reason to get involved as well. Use the Newhouse connections to play this up.
- Back to the "guerilla marketing", if this was the goal, SU should have had people in downtown Albany, Rochester, Buffalo to showcase the new look. Get the SPM students to help out- use social media to create a buzz in regions with potential customers.
- We are the Syracuse Orange, so you might want to make sure that you can reveal the orange uniform that has been designed.

To me, the unveiling to the team is the best part of the new uniform trend. I would have had the team get the 1st look of the new uniforms and then used that video to get more buzz going. I would have gone a step further and again used former players to help. Imagine Shafer brings out Loeb, Smith and Spruill like today and then saying "Wait, I asked a couple of friends of ours to stop in as well" and Chandler, Lemon, etc come out wearing different combinations. Capture that reaction on film and really get a much better reaction than what we are seeing today.

Very good post. I got tired of reading the criticism today but I don't mind it at all when it's back up by solid solutions and ideas.

Thanks. I think the opportunity to do something really cool was there, but for whatever reason what we saw reeked of hastily thrown together.
