By *not* handing it to the next great back, it's effectively over as a meaningful tradition.

Well, let's not get over-dramatic. We've had many other good backs, some of whom also refused it, like Joe Morris. You might remember him. He didn't kill the Legend of 44 by sticking with his own number 47.

Or the hype would last one week. I really doubt all those things would just all of a sudden happen because Sean got 44. Really really doubt it. It sounds like a fairy tale personally.
