PLAYER OF THE YEAR: ALVIN CORNELIUS, TOTTENVILLE
It was hard for the opposition to draw up a scheme that prevented the Syracuse-bound senior from causing havoc on both sides of the football.
Cornelius used his athleticism to become a gamebreaker at wide receiver as well as cornerback, helping the Pirates make their third straight PSAL semifinals appearance.
The 6-2, 190-pound Cornelius recorded two of his team-high six interceptions in a Week 1 win over Jefferson.
Cornelius was already established as a deep downfield threat on offense, before having to adapt to a new role late in the season when starting QB Brandon Barnes suffered a torn ACL against Wagner. Tottenville coach Jim Munson created the “Alcat” position, in which Cornelius used his speed to pile up yardage.
Come next fall, Cornelius will give Syracuse coach Doug Marrone a bevy of options.

Strong safety: The Chargers have been looking for an upgrade at the position for some time, without much success. Steve Gregory has played admirably alongside Eric Weddle, but the Chargers may go in another direction in search of a big-time stopper.
