Two Recruits Changed Everything in the Northeast

He was a very solid player and an excellent shooter.
He shouldn't have played as much as he did, but he won a bunch of games for us in his last couple years.

It will always make me laugh a bit that the most memorable game of the Buddy era for me was the one where he got himself suspended and we unbelievably almost knocked off Duke at the ACCT in NY.

That game was great. Except for the final minute or so...

The recruit who changed everything was Buddy.

The buck stops with the old man who didn't want to retire. If Gerry was a bad recruiter, then someone else should have been in charge of that recruitment. JB had final authority and should have had a better staff when the wheels were falling off.
I don’t disagree with you on any of that. We could have kept up w Uconn had JB prioritized a better transition that focused on the best coach available and not his inexperienced protégé’s like Red.

The decision of two recruits who chose UConn over us changed the trajectory of EVERYTHING, and largely contributed to the position we’re in right now and where UConn is. Those two recruits are Donovan Clingan and Andre Jackson. If we get those two (who we were on the cusp of getting, thanks Gerry), UConn doesn’t have back-to-backs and instead of UConn we were likely in NC or Final Four contention during their college playing days. Danny Hurley really demolished us along with Daddy Ball. Those two and the NC’s that came with them have made UConn a perennial power and us a doormat. Doesn’t help that Hurley replaces Jackson w Castle lmao 😂. We need a massive overhaul.View attachment 259758
We were NEVER getting Donovan

Yeah, I don't know what anyone has seen in our program that shows we would have gotten the best out of these guys. Our development has been almost non existent.
It’s almost the opposite. Syracuse is were you come to regress as a basketball player.

Agree on one thing, but have to disagree strongly on the other.
#1) Without Jackson or Clingan, UConn probably doesn't have those national titles.
#2) Andre Jackson and Clingan are not leading poor Syracuse teams to National Title or Final Four calibre.

Jackson and Clingan would have certainly helped a lot, but there are levels here. And we were several levels down from being a National Title Contender.

Not getting Kevin Huerter because we didn’t have an open scholarship due to sanctions also hurt. Huerter’s shooting on a team with Tyus and Oshae would have been nice.

Clingan was never coming to Syracuse for reasons already. Jackson is another matter. I think what pushed Jackson to UConn over Syracuse was the type of D each school played. I think Jackson wanted to play a pro stye man to man defense instead of zone. And, he had a clearer path to playing time at UConn based on the projected rosters.

I've always questioned that Huerter story. He was a year ahead of Buddy right?

Huerter was Class of 2016.

Buddy was 2018.

Huerter was in the NBA Draft before Buddy entered college.
We wanted Huerter to reclassify if I remember correctly because we were under scholarship limit sanctions.

Huerter last season at Maryland was 2017-18. Buddy's Frosh year was 2018-19 which was Huerter rookie season in Atlanta. One year apart, and nobody was thinking he was two and done when he entered college.

We didn't have room for Huerter and asked him to prep for a year.

Got impatient and committed to Maryland.

After Huerter committed, Malachi decided he wanted to be one and done, so a spot would have freed up for Huerter eventually.

Too late.
