Tyler Lydon getting due props

on Preacher Report:
Ranking Top 25 Sophomores of 2016-17 CBB Season

Talk about hitting the bullseye recruiting wise... Lydon is going to continue to be huge for the program. He alone will make watching every game this coming season a treat. Great basketball IQ, great size, high character, tremendous talent.

I should find the thread where I scolded a large number of board members for thinking he was the 4th/5th best player in the recruiting class, likely from a bias against... upstate players. If I recall correctly, I also projected there was a good chance he'd be the BEST player of the class, instead of the LAST player as a good number of members were ranking him as.

I don't get the title of "insider"/paysider, but I'd like to think many of my posts offer something if they aren't aborted, and dont mind giving myself an occasional pat on the back when I'm as frustrated as Ive been due to the antics on here by the borg today. lol

One thing Lydon had going for him from a young age that many others didn't was a mother who played college hoops and helped him work on his stroke. Apparently she was a good coach. Maybe she can be the 2nd female on the staff and fill the vacuum that's been present since Bernie Fine was unceremoniously forced out the door?

Lydon may be the best recruiting effort in the last 20 years. Not in terms of the overall player's talent but in terms of getting a player who was pretty unknown who has had such a huge positive impact on the program.

That would be me. When they offered him I was like "What?" I was wrong. Yes, I admit it.

I'm all on board with that for sure. In all due credit to JB, Hop, Red, Gmac and the staff... Syracuse has made a living off of picking kids who were underrated in HS or had a lack of accolades coming in and subsequently turned them into big time contributors.

Case in point: Johnny Flynn was more of an afterthought / sweeten up the pot on the Paul Harris recruitment and subsequently went on to be a first round draft pick. Hak was our backup plan to Chris Bosch and Triche because of an untimely ACL had pretty much gone completely unheralded coming out of JDW and although he never became a big time pro prospect he was much underrated throughout his 4 year career at Cuse where he ended up being the winningest player in school history at the time.

But those things while worth mentioning are ancillary facts to your assertion of TL being perhaps the best effort in the last 20 years. It just goes to prove that JB and his staff deserve a great deal in latitude when we weigh in on the level of talent they bring in here. All things considered it is more than remarkable...in fact, it astounding IMHO.

I appreciate your honesty, but you're far from the only person who thought that way. It actually seemed to be the norm. The only way your different from the majority is having the cahones to admit it, and I give you props for that!!

I was concerned for awhile about TL attracted more attention from the defense this season, but with Gillon and hopefully White to help spread the D, he may be able to pick up where he left off. I'm so glad he stayed, and would love if any of our first year players this season could surprise us half as much as Tyler did last season. I'm not sure if I should give credit to the staff, or if Lydon surprised even them with his hard work and skill. Either way, I am grateful!!!

Like Flacusian said, he alone can make watching every game a treat, and if this team develops chemistry they can be a tough game for anyone.

Battle is really a good player. I think he's the next big surprise. I know he's already highly touted and all that. But I think this kid is really over the top special.

I really hope so... if he is a surprise he'd likely be approaching all conference, if not more!

Hopefully he can help erase the last memory of a Battle in a Syracuse game, who helped defeat one of our best teams ever. That's what stuck in my mind a long time ago when I saw the kid's name in the recruiting section. I'm waiting for OIG to administer a nickname to him!

Hak!, the General, Rautins, Triche, too many to count, and they were mostly four year players.

That and the bad job scouting done by the people who rank high school kids, how there were 73 kids ranked ahead of him, I will never know.

I already have a nickname for the duo of Tyus and Moyer: Battle & Rattle.

Hak!

Hakim is a god. Not fair but good point. They both were around 15 pts per game and 12 rebounds per game pre-CBB. They both play with a lot of heart. I can see TL winning us a NC. I still think he hasn't reached his ceiling yet.

Anyone who read quotes from former players who had seen Lydon in the Melo Center prior to the season, should have known that he would be special. Personally, I was expecting it.

On whether Lydon's season was a surprise -- when first recruited, he had skills but was 6ft 8, maybe 175 lbs soaking wet -- too thin to play early at SU? Then, the progression as he gained muscle. Summer after his junior year, he made the U18 team, when Richardson was cut. A year ago, he played pick-up with former players, who reported on his all-around game. Up to 205 lbs. In October. JB disclosed that Lydon was his back-up plan at center. And, in fact, Lydon played the majority of minutes at center.

Maybe it was a surprise -- but the clue was Lydon growing into a very different player.

Lydon looks thicker/stronger in Moyer's twitter pic:

Hak went to a tiny school. He was unranked until we picked him, whereupon he snuck into the top 100. We complain about the Duke effect but there is also a Boeheim effect.

Lydon was also unranked until he committed to SU. Both players have interesting parallels. The thing I remember most about Hak was he was like helicopter landing when he would make a move to the rim. I will remember Lydon for his sweet shooting stroke and his tenaciousness on D. Hak was pretty good on D too. The Block is legendary. And Lydon had huge blocking play against UVA. They are very similar players.
