UConn stop rate on D

They aren't as good as BC.

We are home vs away which makes a difference.

If not for that freak safety, we were even with BC. Those 2 points changed everything.

Ya Uconns Oline is improved but it's no where close to BC's. I don't think they can continuously grind out drives like BC did for a decent part of the game. I think the bigger concern is that Uconn hits a few long runs especially early and we can't get a big enough lead to force them to pass. I also worry a bit about mis-direction and trick plays beign an issue. BC sucked us in a few times and went over the top and SU hasn't seen a ton of trick plays this year and some of our guys * cough Deuce cough* have a track record of being out of position.

Being home though as you noted is a huge advantage and our WR core is probably the healthiest it's been since game 1 save for Haynes who may play.

My concern on D was the number of large gains we allowed all game long.

The 2 big runs hurt, but too many 2-3rd and longs were converted as well.

Last week I was frustrated as usual with the three man rush. The second and third and longs are a direct result of giving up underneath with no pressure.

Then in second half several times we had five or even six man rushes. Maybe we did that because we had a lead, but it forced the quarterback to make a decision, and he rushed several passes. We need to do that to UConn‘s quarterback Evers because he is not good.

just like BC, we need to make them pass. Stack the box for real this time, (and no more cover three on third down and two).

BC provided a lot more tape for Uconn to dial up some run plays that will confuse our safeties. You know there will be several 5-10 yard runs that become 60 yard runs because Duce is caught out of position. Just the way it is.

Best thing we can do is continue to load the box, show blitz and send extra dudes - don't revert back to the soft defensive game plan that we've seen for much of the season.

I would love to go one game without our safeties absolutely giving away a 50+ yard run because they take bad angles. In all honestly behind QB and OL, safety is 3rd on my offseason wish list. Maybe the young guys on the team step up or one of the freshman are ready to play but the safety play needs to improve.

What really frustrates me with the defense is we get no penetration. Weather its a 3 man or 4 man front, it seems our players try to hold their ground and react instead of penetrate. Why can't we attack and cause disruption. I feel like the line and the backers are always on their heals. Our previous scheme was more of a style where we were attacking gaps and I very much preferred that. Also seems like players would prefer playing that as well and seems like it would be easier to recruit to. The read and react just seems like it leads to more medium and long runs. I'd like our front to attack more often, causing disruption and getting more stops for losses or no gain which would put them in longer downs.

I assume the read and react style is supposed to prevent bigger plays from happening. But it surely doesn't seem like it does. I don't know, maybe that is just a tackling and safety taking bad angles issue.

Or since none of them are good we can play a LB instead. Not like we have faced anyone who can pass this year. Playing 5 DBs seems silly.

UConn has one of the weakest schedules in the country. I saw one ranking that's it's 131/134 FBS teams. They put up a good fight against Wake and Duke, and they're much better than their Randy 2.0 teams, but unless we play as bad as we did against Pitt with them playing their A game, we should win. If we play like we played at Cal, we'll win by 3 TD's.
