Umass job just opened up

If you're going to take a step down in level, I think you need to be very strategic about the destination.

Because it is akin to a rehabilitative stint, so you need the outcome to be successful. Not sure whether UMass provides that opportunity.

I would guess his next step would be to take time off, sort through the list of options [which might even include NBA AC roles], and figure out the next move, not just to jump at a convenient opportunity.

Do they make a run at one of our 3 assistants? My guess is yes
Why would they? Our assistants are not desired anywhere. Who wants assistants from a middling program?

Doug Marrone was barely 500 at SU but evaluators knew he was a guy who could coach.

I don't think people look at results as the only metric for assistants. Reputations in the circles, how they recruit, etc matters. Our guys are probably well regarded in college sports. Certainly Hopkins was.

Didn't Elimu Nelson rock that hairstyle in 1996 that's now common? Or is that 20 year cycle thing revving up again?

I agree with you to a certain extent but Doug took a terrible football progam and made it respectable, competitive. The basketball was once a rock solid Top 25 team or better that has been reduced to mediocre. These assistants, whether or not their fault, are probably held partly responsible by onlookers. When have you seen an assistant at a middling program elevated to head coach at another school? Assistants getting head jobs elsewhere usually come from powerhouses. Hop was well-regarded, true. But he was the top assistant and recruiter off a SYR program that had an amazing run from 2009-2014 and had a magic run to the F4 in 16. He was a hot commodity. I don’t believe any of our current assistants are.

Sure seems like he'll be a lifer if he doesn't take the UMass or URI job this year
Saw a Buddy of mine last night who is a season ticket holder and donor at UVM. Every home game, they have the Cats Den, with free drinks and food for the donors and vips before the game. One of the coaches, typically an assistant, will come and do a pregame rundown of what they will key on for that game and answer a few questions. Becker did the last one for senior night. My buddy said he’s never seen Becker so emotional before and figures he’s moving on and knows it.

Isn’t Shaheen Holloway the guy who was implicated in tampering with Taurean Thompson when he was as assistant at Seton Hall? I wonder what JB thinks of Rick advocating for him.

I asked a UMass guy who's all over the process and he said he's been told a million times Becker is not going there

FWIW, ESPN mentioned Autry among a list of possible candidates.
Do you mean the radio show? I just looked on the ESPN UMass page's article from 2 days ago, and they mentioned 6 candidates, but not him. And it wasn't clear if they meant offered, or just hypothetically available.

No, when it was first posted Autry's name was included with the other names. It has since been removed, I wish I posted the link initially, I was surprised he was included.
