UNC fires Hubert Davis

Can’t believe they won’t run at Oats after the 2021 attempt. I don’t understand bringing back a 60 year old coach away from college hoops for a decade to figure out portal/NIL and recruiting again
Neither Oats nor Golden are good fits for UNC. They both have character issues, and neither will be considered. The UNC head coaching position is near the top of the profession. They will have the opportunity to hire an elite prospect. And, as a rule, it takes a coach a few years to be considered elite, so it wouldn't suprise anyone if the new hire will have some age.

He is a clown. And that wasn’t very nice of Red to say that about Davis
I didn’t hear what Red said that was derogatory of Hubert Davis. Could you repeat it because it’s a little surprising to me. I only heard him empathize with Davis and the difficulty, challenge of following a long time legendary coach.

I believe DJ was joking.

Its going to be Donovan - somewhat shocked that A) he would want to get back into this cesspool and B) that UNC will buck up. I can't imagine he's coming in for less than Self and the guy at AZ who I think are the two highest paid guys.

This is the same school that just fired Hubert Davis?

And? Since Dean Smith retired, UNC has always looked in-house for their new head coaches. There have been four hires. Bill Gutheridge and Roy Williams enjoyed more than a bit of success. Doherty, not so much. At most places, Hubert Davis' record would have thrilled the fans, but UNC isn't most places. It would appear that now Carolina is looking outside of the family. I really don't get your point.

It was more a jab at the heir of elitism around UNC in your post. If they want to chase 60 year old nba coaches go for it! Working out well in football!

UNC's sense of elitism in basketball is simply a fact, and they are elite. It is what it is. Football is another matter, and, from my perspective, hiring Belichick was more of an act of desperation, or, maybe exasperation, than anything else.

Can't remember who said it (maybe Gary Parrish), but the way he put it was that if you are a top-5 program, you should always have either a HOFer or someone on that trajectory. That disqualifies Hubert, and if Golden and Oats' character issues are too much to overlook (fair), you're left with Billy Donovan, Dusty May or perhaps Ben McCollum if you're convinced he's the real deal in that sense. Otherwise you're looking at an aging mercenary like Pitino or Calipari.

I think that tweet just proves Goodman makes up half his stuff. No real HC would say that in writing to someone like Jeff Goodman
At the same, preseason mags and Bruce Feldman will run stories/quotes from anonymous coaches on their opinions on teams they play, talking about strengths and weaknesses. When coaches are off the record, the lips get loose.
One exceptions was Fran when he said Notre Dame was clearly better than Miami based on the results SU had against both teams.

supposedly an acc head coach said they were disappointed davis got fired because they were easier to play with him as coach...or something like that. dj was joking it was red. my guess is wade.

Or you make a guy like Tommy Lloyd an offer he can’t refuse…but I’m stuck on why Oats or Golden are out. I still think people are stuck on the old football and basketball models. You should be looking at coaches best able to navigate the NIL/portal side in addition to those with best scheme. This new era will usher in new “elites”

I knew I was missing someone.

I think the Oats-Golden stuff is a matter of culture fit. Oats has had multiple players get in legal trouble, including a second-leading scorer becoming unavailable right before the start of the tournament. The Bediako stuff also rubbed people the wrong way, even though it came from a place of exploring every legal avenue to make your team better.

Golden was technically cleared of the stalking/harassment stuff from last season, but his own legal team admitted that he was involved in some questionable but not illegal behavior. It seems that UF said that since the complainants were not UF students at the time of the filing and that he did not do the "stalking" while on company time, that there was no moral cause to discipline him. Non-bluebloods will overlook a lot of stuff if you're winning, and even the bluebloods will on occasion, but when you have enough resources and history that almost anyone will pick up your call, you can afford to be a little picky.

Calipari is only 7 years older than Donovan. It has been a really long time since Billy The Kid had his hands in college hoops. Bulls clearly want him gone, and he wants to coach but man...

Do they need to come with a 19 year old girlfriend who can go through sorority rush while they are there?

I just think the era of blue bloods is over…some might stay there because they have $$$ and great coaching but playing for a school or conference is a vestige of the past

It’s a crazy thought imo

This, this, this...in FB and in BB. It's a Brave New World now and all will be recalibrated with money, coaching, recruiting, facilities and some tradition as the basis of the new order.
Notice how I listed money 1st.
