USMNT 2025

Agreed by far the best. Him Wright and Pepi.

Patrick Augyemang might beat out Wright for that 3rd spot.

At the start of this game, I thought I was hearing things: 'TIMMY Tillman?" Did Malik change his name, because no offense, but Malik is a lot more badass for a professional athlete than "Timmy". LOL. I understand now (after looking it up), that they are brothers.

US offense B and C team is going crazy against Uruguay, with 3 goals in the first 30 minutes.

After Diego Luna scored the 4th goal of the 1st half, the US shut off, and suddenly gave up 2 or 3 looks, and a spectacular goal to Uruguay on that overhead kick in stoppage time.

Actually great for Poch - he gets to yell at them at halftime that every minute matters.

In group play, conceding a late goal in a game you think you've already won may cost you advancing.

A coach's dream. Best we have looked since we kicked Mexico's butts a few years ago with Pulisic and that gang, when they first earned their stripes.

These are the third choice guys, and they looked super well drilled in how they progressed the ball against Marcelo Bielsa's famous press, and how well they controlled the ball in midfield, getting nearly all the loose balls against some very experienced pros in Uruguay's midfield, like Betancur and Ugarte.

Stars for me so far are Freeman, Berhalter, Luna and the young Tillman. Reyna of course with an impact off the bench. Dest always productive, but not as good as the Paraguay game.

5-1 w 15 minutes to go. Such an impressive performance.

Beat 2 South American teams, play 2 top 10 European teams in March - with hopefully the full first team.

We might actually go into WC summer camp with tremendous interest, if we can beat Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal in his first appearance on US soil in 12 years. Belgium should also be a very good challenge.

These guys play like hungry lions. If this team could play for a full 90+ without a let down, we would be very, very dangerous. I see much more useful depth than we had in 2022.

World Cup will feature at least a 26 man roster, and perhaps 30 men (currently under consideration).

Goalkeepers
Freese
Schulte
Turner or Horvath

Central Defenders
T. Ream
M. Robinson
C. Richards
McKenzie
Carter-Vickers

Left Back
A. Robinson
M. Arfsten

Right Back
Dest
Freeman
Scally

Defensive Midfield
Tyler Adams
Tessman
Y. Musah
Roldan or Cardoso

Attacking Midfield
W. McKennie
Malik Tillman
Gio Reyna
Diego Luna
S. Berhalter

Forwards
C.Pulisic
Flo. Balogun
Tim Weah
R. Pepi
B. Aaronson

That's 26 guys with 2 alternates. Unless FIFA votes to increase the squad size to 30, I would say that I probably have about 90-95% of our final roster above, injuries hopefully to be avoided.

Your thoughts?

We look like we have a lot of guys who can be actual contributors, and enough depth to keep them all working hard to keep their places. This team really seems to be shaping up!

A few links to articles from The Athletic post-window. Paywall, but if you have NY Times, you can access these.

First up is their projections of the 26 man WC roster, after I gave mine yesterday.

Next is a piece talking about the mentality shift in the US team since the last couple windows, and the current 5 game unbeaten streak against Top 40, WC-qualified clubs.

And finally here's a recap of the Uruguay massacre, and how the team and coaches are feeling. Much ado made of Poch's reaction to the first question, saying "Wow, this is so impressive, missing so many of our regulars." OH BOY, did that piss him off! Every man who plays that well is is in contention for a starters' position on the team.

Pepi still gets into some good spots. But he has struggled to bury several of them after he had the run awhile back

Saw it the other day. The Musah take was weird to me. I guess I don’t like the metrics or don’t get the metrics.

I was kind of troubled by the article saying "there are a couple players he doesn't like". Pretty sure Musah was one of them.

Agreed. Kid is fairly young and talented. I feel a coach is there to tap into your talents. How can I get you to be the best you. Not sure what behind the scenes are though

And now Richards stretchered off. Though its rumored not too serious.
Glasner said he needed stitches and was bleeding but should be fine and potentially available for their next fixture.

Latest article from The Athletic (NY Times) on the current leaders to make the WC roster. This focuses a lot on technical and tactical flexibility that this group of guys offer.

We have a pretty good looking player pool. I hope Tyler Adams is fit again by April, and that Antonee Robinson gets back into form at Fulham.

The two weakest areas are CB and forward. How is it possible that Tim Ream, who was probably too old in the last World Cup is projected to start 4 years later in this upcoming world cup? Our CB pool has definitely not progressed enough the last 4 years... where is our Gooch of this generation?

It's still not clear to me if any of our forwards are good enough to score a goal in the World Cup... they really weren't last time (yes Wright had one well out of the run of play). It's better than Berhalter ball where the primary job of the forward seemed to be first line of defense, but I still don't see it with these guys. It's crazy that in a country as large as the US we can't find a single guy who is even considered below average at the international stage at forward.

Dest and Reyna are the X factors in our pool... if Dest is healthy and playing well he brings a quality and attacking presence to balance out Pulisic on the other side and makes the team truly dangerous moving forward. Without him on the pitch the opponents will focus on hacking the crap out of Pulisic. If Reyna is in form and plays like he did recently he brings an attacking element to the middle of the park that no one else in the pool can provide.

USMNT game used to be appointment viewing for me... but like so many of the sports teams I follow the last decade or so has really soured me on them. I really hope we get a fun team to watch.

Personally, I like Ream, and I think if you play him in a back 3, he will be like a coach out there to keep guys in the right position. Yes, his quickness isn't what it was, but he reads the game better than any of our other CBs.

As for Gooch, he wasn't very good, IMO. When the US would be under pressure, all the would do is kick the ball out of bounds, over and over, immediately returning possession to the other team, and not relieving the pressure. You have to make sure your clearances stay in play, so there is a chance of your guy getting the 2nd ball. He was terrible at that.

I think Balogun is pretty good. He kind of reminds me of Nicholas Jackson, former Chelsea guy. Makes good runs, presses effectively. We have other guys scoring in the 2nd tier leagues in Europe. Hopefully one or two of them finish the season on a hot streak.

Dest is a key guy. What I got from that article is that Poch has 3 different viabe options at right back / right winger, depending on the formation.
Reyna hopefully landed a job as a late game attacking sub, along with somebody like Aaronson, who is an agent of chaos.

I think Reyna will be called back for March, and I hope he does well. He did get 4 starts for Gladbach in December, and has already played more minutes for them that he has in the last couple years at Dortmund.

I'm getting excited about our chances. We are playing some top teams leading up to the Cup. I would love to see us pull an upset or two over European competition.

Brenden Aaronson is interesting. Hasn't been someone I've been impressed with that often. However, he's finding probably the best form of his career to date. I think you need to call him in to camp and see how he performs. His ability to press from the attacking spots could help this team.

I don't think you can count on Brendan to score, but you CAN count on him to run himself ragged.

I will never forget a game when he was playing for Leeds, and he ran down the Chelsea goal keeper, and blocked his kick back into the net. I call him an agent of chaos. There is a use for that skill in the tool box.

Form of his life. Two more today away to Newcastle.
