6:56 - Buddy jumper ties game at 54-54
6:26 - Va Tech miss and Buddy rebound
6:18 - Buddy TO - steal by Aluma
6:10 - Va Tech breakaway dunk by Mutts. Only a 2 point deficit - 56-54
6:04 (!) - Jimmy B missed 3. Six seconds after the dunk!
5:42 - Va Tech rebound by Aluma, Mutts jumper - 4 point lead.
4:50 - Foul on Swider, Va possession, Aluma dunk - 6 point lead.
4:25 - 10 seconds after a time out, Buddy misses a 3.
3:56 - Mutts rebound, Aluma jumper - 8 point lead.

That stretch right there was the ball game.

Hero ball with the backdown, getting your pocket picked and dunk at the other end.

Jimmy hoists a very quick one and misses, the Buddy does the same thing coming out of a timeout.

Each one of the three plays leads to breakaways at the other end.

Somebody already did that whole sequence.

All of this. ^^^ why were they so averse to working the ball around and/or trying to drive? Offensive movement really stagnated yesterday. And chuckling up terrible shots in that sequence and for most of the last 5 minutes.

Our offense, for better or worse, is fundamentally a Buddy-centric offense with limited off ball movement.

Is what it is. Sometimes the shots go in, sometimes they don't.

It's high risk, high reward because of how dependent it is on him.

He took 19 FGAs last game. That's a lot of FGAs for someone that shoots 40% from the floor and 35% from three. But that's how we are rolling.

I don’t think Buddy is a great shooter at all when moving, curling & coming off of screens. When he’s moving sideways in the air it’s almost a guaranteed miss, often times ugly.

When his feet are set, when he come off a screen & jump stop/plants/squares his feet it is just so significantly better. Dude is not made from the leaning, fall away, contorting 3 point shooting cloth…

SU erased a 12-point deficit over the course of ~7 minutes. Made some shots, got some breaks (VT going cold), exerted a lot of energy and tied the game with 7 minutes left. I compiled this quickly, but in those 7 minutes, SU went 3-8 from three (8-14 from the field). Meanwhile, VT went 0-6 from three (1-11 from the field).

Buddy shot us back in the game (he went 5-8 from the field, 2-4 from three during those seven minutes) to gave us a real chance. It was not able to be sustained, by either him or the team.

To cast too much blame here seems silly ("hero ball"), at least from my point of view. If so, Buddy "heroed" us back into a tie.

We "dominated" for 7 minutes, then they did the same to us the final 7 minutes. We lost by 12, right where it all started.

Law of averages. The better team won Saturday, which stinks, but it was the reality without Jesse playing.

Same thing with Cooney. He took waaaay too many off-balanced shots because he was running too hard to get away from a defender.

It's about taking good shots. The 3 shots I was most disappointed about took only 6 seconds, 8 seconds and 10 seconds - two of those were rushed, and all were made without making a pass to a single teammate.

I hear you. Fair assessment.
Remember, however, that both Buddy and Joe made a few of these quick shots during the VT game. Swider made some the last 2-3 games. Buddy made about 4 of these shots last year in the Tournament against SDSU and West Virginia. No second guessing then. Live by it, die by it. This is who this team is.

Makes sense. Not sure we need coaches. Just roll the ball out there.

I said to myself immediately after the Buddy turnover and the Jimmy quick missed 3 that those plays would be the key mistakes to cost us the game. Unfortunately I was right. You could just feel it at the time.

My point is that you can take a "heat check" at certain points in the game, and if you make the shot, it can be a back breaker.

But when the score is within a bucket or two, you have to take GOOD shots, not just the first available shot. Especially when you are at the end of the game. "Winning Time" requires good decisions,

The key is being squared to the basket, which is why the shooting percentage is noticeably higher when the ball goes inside, then back out again.
