Hell of a coach, too. A young, long-haired Fireball Junior sat in press row in St. Louis -- right in front of Ernie D's mother -- when Gavitt's Providence team went to the Final Four in '73 with Ernie, Marvin Barnes and Kevin Stacom. Probably woulda made it to the championship game on Monday night, when Bill Walton went off and made 21 of 22, if Bad News hadn't hurt his knee early in semifinal against Memphis.

As it was inevitable, it is almost a devine sign that it is okay for SU to leave. RIP Mr. Gavitt. You were a basketball visionary.

Almost surrealistic. As though the rumors caused him to leave before the possibility of seeing his "baby" cease to exist as he knew it.
