Great question actually. In terms of adding players- certain staff additions being locked in with this help may help with bringing in certain guys…

Just wish they waited until that launched to grab all the momentum that exists now and that has already brought in money to the coaches fund.

Agree completely. Ever since negotiations to transition Orange United to a different group fell apart there has been no channel for grass roots NIL donations. Seems like the strategy with the launch of revenue sharing was to funnel that level of donor to the internal funds managed by CAF - Athletics Opportunity, Athletics Competitive Excellence and individual Coaches’ Funds - and rely on whales and corporate partners to fund true NIL. Somewhat understandable as the $20.5MM in direct payments to athletes was likely unbudgeted in long range plans and cereal challenge for a department that struggles to break even and doesn’t have the benefit of relying on state tax payers to foot the bill. Left a gap in supporting any sport other than football and the two basketball programs immediately and in the escalating arms race of hoops caused those programs to fall behind.

This is great for GMac and the men. It would be nice for them to do it for Coach Jack. She grew up in Syracuse, played at SU and now is a great leader for the team and university. Even with a 1/3 of the support the men’s program is getting Coach Jack would make the team in to one of best in the acc and a perennial top 25 program.

Coach Jack has the same fund that this initiative feeds. It received over $200k in donations on Giving day - 50x what it received on that day last year. Women’s hoops is also the only program where you can earmark Competitive Excellence (revenue sharing) donations to a specific sport.

Yeah I mean I’d rather not because for every single one of the public schools over borrowing they all are staring down a bill coming due that will be more and more difficult to swallow.

This will allow their programs to take care of their needs and SU can put their revenue into revenue sharing. With the new NIL having to go through a Clearinghouse, it’s supposed to be business related. How a donation, not related to a business might be complicated to get approved. I believe SU wants the NIL to come from local/national businesses.

It really won't. Public universities are funded by state tax payers. State public school alumni = state tax payers. They would rather having winning sports programs than be worried about a functioning education system in their state or funded pensions.

You'd be surprised how much the success of these major sports programs equates to the economies of some of these states and especially the counties these schools are in.

Oh I know the economics well trust me. I also know there are a lot of states struggling right now with their budgets. 20 years and counting in the Finance sector overlapping private and public. This new reality of NIL and Rev share as added a lot more strain and complexity.

This is not the place for it but there are a number of much bigger issues pressing on state budgets and households that will test the appetite of what people will accept. It’s early still.

It takes a lot of $600 meet and greets to meet the income levels of most of these players. Anything over $600 has to be approved through the Clearinghouse.

Lobdell’s fundraiser is now nearly $81,000. He’s upped his match from $50,000 to $100,00. Kudos to him.

This is where I am at. I give monthly to the general athletics fund and made a donation last week on giving day. Anything else I give I want to go to NIL.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but is there an accounting of this fund that is done? Is what it is spent on public? Whats stopping us from, say, slipping a donor money from this fund to offset an NIL payment they make to a player?

I'm not knowledgeable about how these funds work, this is a real question lol

How does it work that you donate to Revenue Share for a particular program? Universities are capped on total amount and I understand SU is giving a fixed percentage of that amount to FB, MBB, WBB, and then splitting to the rest. So if SU is giving 5% to WBB anyway, and you want to help pay players and donate towards that 5%, if they were giving 5% no matter what wouldn't that just mean your money doesn't impact the total amount of salary available for that program? They can use your money to cover the wbb 5% and then use money previously earmarked for wbb to pay for rowing or something. Obviously same goes for MBB and FB. Am I missing something?

As a regular fan (and not a whale), if you want to donate to your favorite program so it can recruit better players and make your fandom more enjoyable, seems like NIL is the way, not this other stuff SU is pushing.
