I’ve been away from the board for a few days and have been reading that it was mostly the offenses fault, and some people say it’s mostly the defense’s fault. I usually rewatch the game with in a day or so, but it was so disheartening, I needed a few days.

After re-watching the game, the offense moved the ball and was competent on 80% of the plays. 2 fumbles, a pick, bad play calls, and a very close call on Ross Simmon’s elbow ruined an otherwise fairly competent game. Considering the production, the three points was an aberration.

The defense was a comedy of errors, all game long. We were fortunate Duke only had 38.

As I saw it, the big mistakes were as follows on offense and why they were failures.

-First and foremost, Willis only getting six carries after the first two series is coaching malpractice.

-the interception was not really about whether or not Ross Simmons ran the wrong route or Ricky‘s arm got hit. It’s about the fact that he had double coverage to his left on one receiver, and two open receivers with single coverage to his right, that he never looked at. It should’ve been an easy pitch and catch to the right for 5 yards.

-Willis‘s long run to the 6 yard line should’ve been a touchdown. He would’ve been tackled somewhere around the 2 yard line and probably would’ve fallen into the end zone, but for some reason, he cut left, into a defender, rather than stay on a straight line.

-then a terrible play call by Nixon on 2nd and 6, and no audible by Collins. We ran the read option to the opposite side of an unblocked linebacker who blew up the play. You cannot run a read option against an unblocked player wider than the defensive end on either side. Period. It was a bad call and should’ve been an Audible. Like the interception, it’s a sign that Ricky does not have enough experience to read a defense. Nixon shouldn’t have called it.

-the fumbles speak for themselves, and if Collins throws the ball 6 inches higher, Ross Simmons is down at the one.

On defense, it was clear to me that Heard, sparrow, Samuels, Tremble, Kerr and Long were exposed badly for their lack of experience/skill. And our DTs were pushed around. (Linebacker play was especially egregious, and most of the breakdowns were when Sparrow and Heard were in).

-Duke’s first touchdown drive from the 12, Sparrow has outside contain, but runs into the middle of the pile. He is stopped, (and held) by Duke OL. Easy touchdown through his gap. A holding would’ve been called if he saw the play and ran toward the RB (exposing the holding) but he never even saw the play.

-Long touchdown run. Again, Sparrow is in the game, and again he runs into a gap already occupied by two Syracuse defenders, leaving his gap exposed. Terrible play.

Dukes last touchdown. A comedy of errors on the entire team. Duke has a seven man front, an Hback, and one reciever in motion. Samuels does a half assed job following the receiver in motion, just jogging, and actually obstructs the view of Heard and the Safties, once the ball is snapped. Here again, Robinson is out coached. We have a six man front against seven linemen and an HBack. Deuce has the quarterback, and Samuels has the receiver so we are essentially 8 on the LOS, Leaving the middle vulnerable. Rooks attacks with a high pad level and gets absolutely destroyed. Because we only have three players backing up the six man D line, with Rooks out of the way, all they need to do is run one lineman to the second level for an easy TD. Heard makes a half assed attempt to tackle, and Long is out of position. Tremble is in position to blow up the play in the backfield, (the same way Duke did to us in the first quarter), but is hesitant and runs down the line of scrimmage rather than into the backfield. This is a lengthy description, but shows a terrible formation by Robinson, spreading out our defense against essentially an eight man front, which is coaching malpractice, and bad execution by multiple players.

So in my opinion, the offense had a lot of bad luck, but the problems are fixable and the three points was an anomaly. If “the ball bounced a little differently”, we might’ve had 28 points.

The defense was just more of the same, with too many inexperienced players, and bad coaching/playcalling by E Rob. The big problem we’ve had is not being able to tackle, the worse problem is not even being in a position to whiff on a tackle. That happened all day long. Our secondary was so ineffective, they did not have one PBU the entire game. (up until this game, we actually led the ACC in PBUs). Unlike the offense, we are not likely to improve.

So the offense was unfortunate, but the defense sucked. Again.

My opinion is sort of the opposite.

I don't disagree with the anomalies--and they do give hope for SMU--it's just woulda coulda shoulda doesn't put points on the board. Clutch plays do, and we didn't make them. Nobody wins games scoring 3 points.

Other side of the coin, while difficult, offenses can score more than 38 points. And they can definitely score more than 28 points, which is what Duke scored that weren't off the offense's three turnovers.

That is not to excuse the defense. It was clearly a subpar performance for all the reasons you described. I just don't see anything they could have reasonably done to win the game, whereas, same offensive efficiency as the Clemson game I think we could be looking at a 31-28 victory or something like that.

The least amount of points Duke had given up in an FBS game was 33 and we scored 3. Can’t beat anyone scoring 3 points.

The D was not good but the O was awful.

Edit
We only had 314 yards! And 92 of those came in the 4th Q with the score 38-3.

People are really reaching for excuses. I get it as a fan we want hope and not to face reality.

I don't think it's a guarantee Willis goes any farther if he stay straight or goes right on the long run. It looks like he may have had more room, but the WR ran past the defender, faking a deep route rather than blocking, so he would've had a chance to make the tackle. You do have to like Willis's chances one on one, though.

He cut left INTO a tackler's range. If he stays straight or cuts right, he gets in easily.

Wow, couldn't disagree more. No idea what he was looking at to cut left there. A straight ahead sprint gets him into the end zone. His blocker was inside the guy who made the tackle and he inexplicably cut into the tackler.

A great post! My only issue is your criticism of the play call on 2nd down near the goal line. Play calling is almost ALWAYS the most over used complaint from fans when things go awry. You may be right about Collins changing the play at the line but the obvious fop au there was not chucking the ball out of bounds after his great effort to get out of the initial tackle. No problem at all with the play call except that....it didn't work.

Is it offense or defense?

I have pointed this out before, but last year...and we were a 10-win team, mind you...we ranked 14th out of 17 ACC teams in scoring defense.

We currently rank dead last in the ACC in scoring defense and even before Angeli went down, we ranked 14th in the conference in that category.

Our defense is poor, it is not a new thing, and it has been poor for the past two years. Our offense struggled last week, and may well continue to do so going forward with the change in QB's, but our defense has been consistently a problem.

Still waiting for the press to ask Fran about this.

Always fun to dissect who was most horrible in a blowout loss.

But I don't think you're being fair to the special teams by not giving them some attention for horrible returns.
Horrible decisions on returns and then horrible returns. The punting and kicking were good though.

I look at it as who played differently. That was most certainly the offense, not all Rickie but he is the leader of the team and I saw some confidence issues that soaked into the other position groups. Alot of that was just playing from behind though and the staff not recognizing the hole they were creating. It was basically the Pitt game although the Pitt game was much more of a fluke given all the pick 6's.

The Defense essentially played the same as they always do and how they've played for the entirety of the Fran Brown era. They are not an effective unit when the offense is losing yards and turning the ball over.

For people to say oh my god the defense was so terrible this game, they really haven't been watching. The defense played the same as they always do, the only difference is that the opposing offense had a real QB and was playing with a big lead all game.

Defense was bad last year with multiple NFL caliber players, not sure why anyone thought it wouldn’t be worse this year. Pearl is the only portal addition on defense who is decent. Bryant, Reese, Rooks and Thomas have been below average players.

Many of us feared the defense was going to be exposed big time without McCord laying down cover fire. I think Dasher was leading that charge.

It's not a quick fix to upgrade the talent on that side of the ball. Replacing a coordinator, however, is entirely doable... and necessary. If Fran has the chops to be the head man then Erob will either move on to another P4 program as a position coach/recruiter... or Fran will bring in a "Co" defensive coordinator to save face for his friend.

I just don’t understand why we don’t use Willis a lot more than we do (or seem to, I don’t know the stats on this). But I do know I have continually questioned why Willis is not on the field a lot through these first few games.

Is he playing hurt possibly? I know he missed the Colgate game
