Today's Washington Post Sports section has a piece about the SU hiring of an ESPN executive as AD and what this tells us about the state of college sports. The closing paragraph says that there is no longer a line between college sports and entertainment.

A key quote is, "By turning its athletic department over to a television executive, a school is essentially saying, “Our athletic department is a corporate entity whose product is entertainment. It is not an extension of our educational mission.”

This is predictable clucking from the Ivy Leaguers who write this stuff and wish all of college athletics were at the NESCAC level. This romanticizing about the purity of college athletics forgets the period before the mid-1950's when Princeton and Penn were National powers. (Although Kilgore went to SU, he's got to fit in with the heavy vibes at the Post)

Of course this is the Washington Post, one of the most completely politicized papers in the US. They have recently temporarily shut up about the "Redskins" name after a study showed that 90% of native Americans were unconcerned.

I find the reasoning of "he's a TV exec" so he doesn't care about students or academics, repulsive and lazy.

Wait until you can get a comment from the guy himself.

It seems to me that he'll be great for students, athletes and communications students alike. He's ideally suited to mentor a generation of SU students in one of SU' s specialties and one that is going through incredible growth. Great hire for students and a better one for SU as a cooperative entity in the massive business that is college sports. I believe he's a guy with great vision, a good attribute to help SU navigate the minefield of the financial side of college sports. Most of the time you see success in college athletics leading to a career in broadcasting. It seems a coup for a successful exec to leave a career in broadcasting to return to his alma mater to lead the school's AD at such a critical time. There are lots of ways to view Wildhack' s hire but all that I see are the positives.

That 90% is low.

Agreed. He will be great for students to interact with, especially those in Newhouse and Falk.

While blunt in its execution, that statement isn't wholly inaccurate.

Syracuse didn't create this game. We just got ourselves a player that understands the rule book better than everyone else...

The statement was not meant to be a slam, only a statement of fact. In his Q&A with Carlson, Wildhack stresses our need to ensure our Student Athletes get the best resources for academic and athletic performance. These are great words and I'm looking forward to him making it so. If he does, then we'll know the statement to be inaccurate. If not...

I think you might be watching too much Fox News.

When I watch FOX News, I know I am getting news seen through a particular ideological prism.

Same thing when I read the Wast Post every day. I know it's thoroughly and completely biased in every section.

I've taken to watching the BBC to get a view that isn't politicized like FOX and the Washington Post and the PBS/NPR.

Define "Best".

He is 100% correct.

And nowhere does he cluck anything about wishing college athletics were at the NESCAC level. That is your insertion.

So this whining about erasing of the line between college and entertainment means what exactly in your opinion?

What do you think he's suggesting?

And it's not like we haven't heard this sentiment before.

I've fantasized about driving a 76 Caddy convertible with longhorns attached to the grill and a pro-gun sticker on the back bumper and parking it in front of Sidwell Friends School. Talk about micro-aggressions!

You might want to pick another school.

Then explain why BBC is foaming at the mouth with a one sided view that that Great Britain should stay in the European Union. BBC unbiased, is this a joke?
