Watched SU - Penn State Replay This AM

Shafer said as much recently. Something about how they failed to identify just how good Hunt was with his legs when things broke down. It had to do with camp and how sacks are touch, blown dead.

Remember, all of the lead up was how Allen had just as much speed as Hunt, but had a better arm. Turns out no one was accounting for just how shifty and poised Hunt would be in real games..

I think we've sort of seen this with Austin Wilson. He was getting outplayed in the drills but put together two real good scrimmages. Kid might be a gamer.

Drew Allen: terrible. Terrible terrible.

Wonder what he thought of his time at SU. He better not feel like he didn't get a shot because he certainly did

he seemed like a genuinely good person who just wasnt a great quarterback. maybe because he never got a shot at ou, it hampered his development. it must be tough to take 3-4 years off and try to play. add in the new oc and it was a huge challenge.

A few really bad throws against PSU - in crucial situations.

hunt was so terrible in his first couple BCS opponent games, he would've ended up benched had he been the one to start the year. good chance they end up losing the first two games with him looking terrible, then bring in allen to look terrible against NC St and WF

getting the allen experiment out of the way early allowed them to take their lumps with hunt.

it's all just a big accident but i'm glad it worked out how it did

Agree 100% with the part highlighted above.

Hindsight is always 20/20.

The competition was close, we were playing a tough opponent on the "road" [basically], and Hunt was completely unproven. It isn't that hard to see why they erred on the guy who supposedly was a better passer, who'd played at Oklahoma versus a kid who hadn't seen the field.

It was the safer choice, I think we all understood it at the time. Had we opened with Wagner/Tulane then moved onto Penn State and NW, it may have played out differently. I think we would have started out 0-2 regardless. They only get what, 3-4 weeks of practice, and no preseason games to make the decision.

I think with Hunt, the Orange beats Penn State.

Hunt had spent the entire spring running the first team - he had been in the program for three years - he was the leader of the offense.

He would have taken advantage of what PSU was giving us during that game in my opinion.

Didn't the staff say that Allen looked better in practice leading up to the PSU game too? I want to say he had Ethan Coleitis where he was great in practice but fell apart in games but I could be wrong.

Ignoring running ability, I'm just shocked that the staff considered Allen the better passer, given how many of his passes failed to clear the line of scrimmage due to the hands of defenders or the helmets of offensive linemen.

I've never seen anything like it, and I'd have to think his low release point was apparent during summer practices.

I'm not to sure about that. His first couple shots at good teams didn't go too well.

Yes Allen was better in the preseason practices. It was the right decision at the time. Hunt took several games vs good competition to get to the point where he was pretty darn good. He wouldn't have been any better vs PSU.
