think that Bill O'Brien is a hell of a coach and smart MF'er for getting out of there when he did. Can't imagine him eating the of that disgusting fanbase. He must have just been so sick of it. Took the job, proved he was HC worthy and moved on, well done. I think he is one of the best coaches in the game.

Franklin can recruit, don't think much of him as a coach and he is a scumbag for sure. He will probably be there for a long time.

From Bill O'Brien's mouth, when he took the job he didn't think the sanctions would be nearly as bad as they were. He said he was sitting in his office as they announced the findings thinking what did I get myself into. Then, he looked at the kids and used it as a way to galvanize the team.

I completely agree with you in that I think he's one of the best young coaches in the game.

The only thing James Franklin has ever proved is that he can recruit. He's never finished higher than 4th in his division as a HC. Granted that was at Vandy and in the SEC East. If he continues to struggle at PSU and hover around .500 with losses to the likes of Temple, he'll take a step back sooner rather than later.

If PSU does not go 6-6 this year, I do not expect to see Franklin there next year. That is one school that has unlimited money and alumni backing to bring in whoever the hell they want to win now.

My cousin is a walk-on at PSU. Apparently, most of the team hates Franklin and thinks the staff is a bunch of amateurs, especially the OC. Won't be surprised to see a lot of transfers after this season and the QB turn pro, even if his stock is hurt because the offense sucks. They all loved O'Brien.

I've been watching Hard Knocks, and I keep thinking that O'Brien was never suited to be a college coach. I think he's a very good coach, but he's too much of a ball-buster to be effective with scholarship players. Smart to move when he did.

he realized that they are a cult and got out

He's great in the show, seems to really relate to players and comfortable in his own skin, the leadership role doesn't seem to bother him a bit. Agree, he is an NFL coach all the way. He may drop more bombs than I do as well, which is saying something

It is abundantly clear why B'OB and HCDM are pals. I would assume the former will learn from the mistakes of the latter.

Can't help but think about what could have been had Dougie gotten his buddy to be the OC for him on the Hill.

his offenses are always bad. maryland, vandy, penn state

i understand why SU hands the keys to a dope who can recruit but even with their disgusting institutional history child rape enabling, they shouldn't be so worried about recruiting that they give the job to a guy who has proven he doesn't know what he's doing on offense

Why is he a scumbag? (Not agreeing or disagreeing, I'm honestly curious)

When I looked into his actual coaching history, I was less than impressed. Almost all of his listed accomplishments came as a WR Coach. Not only that but I think his longest stint at one institution was 3 years.

Makes me wish we could get a shot at them this year.

I was at a restaurant with the wife and kids after trudging through the State Fair all day in 85+ temp. I didn't think anything could bring a smile to my face. But a tall beer + watching Penn State lose? I was giddy.

Penn State has a first round NFL(probably top half of the 1st round)QB starting and there coaching staff can't execute its offense. Franklin is going to Bo Pelini that job and go 9-3 or 8-4. If the alumni don't care he will be fine but his coaching chops on gameday will screw them a couple of games each year.

They're fighting with Maryland and Rutgers for 4th in their division. I don't think their fans will be happy for long.

As an aside, I'm in a fantasy league with a bunch of PSU grads and changed the name of my team to "10 SACKenberg's."

Right now Michigan State and Ohio State are in a league above. Michigan this year is vulnerable but by year 3 they should join the two above and then its Penn State/Rutgers/Maryland for 4th-6th and Indiana 7th.

Yeah its like the SEC East all over again for Franklin except those East divisions weren't as tough once Meyer left Florida.

Penn State down = Syracuse and other NE teams up.

Disagree. The Northeast needs a good program to keep kids in the area. If Penn State is mediocre it means top talent is more likely to go outside the region, not go to lesser schools. The less the area cares about local college football the more likely kids will go to where people do care.

IMO the fact that the Northeast schools are all in different conferences hurts everyone's recruiting. If kids wanted to go to PSU or beat PSU then it would help recruiting.

IMO Michigan, Nebraska, Penn State won't even get back to superpower status. They will still be powers but a step below elite. I would say the same thing about FSU, Miami, and ND. All those schools can still win a title but none will ever get back to where they are Top 10 teams every year.

Outside the SEC only Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, and USC can IMO.

Disagree Florida State, Ohio State, Michigan, can all be superpower teams thanks to the brands. Those teams can recruit anywhere in the nation. Florida State got stale because Bowden stayed to long, Ohio State w/ Meyer will always have a dominant offense. Michigan with Harbaugh will be elite.

I would agree on Miami, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Penn State though they aren't getting back to superpower status.

I hope you meant PSU, and not SU.
