watching some of these ACC games

Ahaa.

I think I see the problem.

You are looking at total seats sold or occupied and the ACC cares a lot about just who is in those seats.

The difference between Villanova or Georgetown or Providence and the ACC is that ACC schools have very large and very loyal booster organizations that must be catered to. The Terrapin Club --- which is the one I am familiar with --- has thousands of members and a number of big donors. (I know MD is now in the B1G, but its an example).

These groups need to be catered to. So if they are in favor of NYC --- or can eventually be sold on it --- the its a good idea. If they are against it, it won't fly.

The ACC has to serve two masters.
This is really a big factor. Ours has minimum contributions set for getting nearby parking at FB, where you sit in the stadium, and access to X number of tickets for the ACCT. Plus you lose bonus priority points for missing a year's contribution. I can imagine that UNC's contribution levels for bball make ours look like chump change.

As this conversation attests, some in the Orange Nation have no real understanding of all the changes that ACC membership mean for the SU athletic programs. Some are struggling with the idea that SU will not be playing --- except occasionally --- in a basketball tournament at MSG at the end of the regular season.

They also have a limited understanding of just how different the ACC schools are from the mostly very small Catholic schools that made up the original Big East. And there is some belief that we can cause the ACC to morph into a more Northeastern conference based on holding tournaments in the NE or even adding additional Northeastern schools (like UConn).

And there will have to be some adjustment in SU fan thinking relative to the role we play in the ACC. Boeheim said it best when he first heard of a possible move to the ACC years ago. He said that the move made no sense to him. Why would we go from a conference where we have a leading voice to one where the leaders are already extablished and we are not one of them. Syracuse had an outsized role because of the success of our basketball, football and lacrosse programs (at the point when the first ACC expansion occurred.)

Maryland always chafed at the dominance in the ACC of the NC schools. I suspect SU fans will eventually become more unhappy even though the dominace of the NC schools has been diluted with these new members (SU, Pitt and UL)

Everyone who wishes for a Syracuse stadium at Skytop should read these posts. I don't care what region it's in, an arena in the suburbs sucks.

Football and ncaa/conf tournament basketball are two different things.

I would think big ACC donors would relish the opportunity for an annual pilgrimage to NYC for hoops, shopping, sightseeing etc...

Versus going to Greensboro for hoops and...Denny's?

I'm not sure. Some may. Some may not.

I'm pretty sure the ACC will sort that out.

And they have both shopping and sightseeing in Washington, DC. with less outrageous prices.

In the SU world, we have a lot of NYC lovers. Many are from the area. But NYC isn't for everyone.

Oh by the way, there's a ton of bad restaurants in NYC. Probably even some Denny's.

We will see if DC is any better ... or more to your tastes. But I expect there will be whining about that venue too.

DC seems like a nice compromise geographically and should be used on a regular basis. We'll own Verizon next year just like we always do.

D.C. Is fine with me.

Great restaurants. Great sightseeing.

Verizon center is a great arena.

If they want to do DC, no issues here.

Oh by the way, NYC also has a ton of GREAT restaurants.

Greensboro has...Denny's?

The ACC Tournament will KILL in Brooklyn. KILL! Once Swofford sees the $$$ and the exposure NYC brings he will have to consider a happy medium between the new reality and dusty old-money booster club. As we well know in Syracuse, everything changes. Tobacco Road will have to grasp that eventually as well. Maryland being gone is already a big change to the ACC. Tradition means jack nowadays. $$$'s rule.

Except Brooklyn's not NYC.

I don't know why some equate NYC/MSG as the "Mecca" of bball - the Knicks have sucked for decades, there's no good college teams there. The state of Texas (and the entire south in general far surpasses NY/Northeast in basketball output (*shudders from the NYC crowd*).

I guess if you live there or are from there it seems awesome, but it's not for everyone. Every major city has stuff to do and an arena and food, water, shelter. It's on the outskirts of ACC territory, not like the middle of the Big East.

I would bet the average distance from all the ACC schools to Nashville, Atlanta, Cleveland, Indianapolis and maybe even Chicago and Detroit is less than New York (not that distance is even a factor anymore).

...?

Barclays may not be MSG, but it's certainly in NYC.

Because NYC is the mecca of the world. It's an international city that can't be compared to any other city in the country. Maybe LA, maybe.

Only on a map.

Tobacco Road mafia, baby! It's not a college atmosphere. No energy. No excitement. It's a gawld dang Cocktail party! Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

I wonder how our southern overlords are liking the new Fri/Sat primetime schedule as opposed to the sleepy Sat/Sun afternoons
