Way too early 2026 Depth Chart/Needs

Offensive line and defensive line and maybe a quarterback are all we need. Getting Calvin Russell made everyone feel good but when the quarterback has no time to scan the field we could have Randy Moss himself out there and he wouldn’t make much of a difference.

Also, based on the abilities of this past years O line portal additions, Fran needs help with O line talent evaluation and coaching. Austin Collins is a good player but I wonder how many Nil dollars were spent on the rest, who have not impressed. Big guys do not always beat up smaller guys. Fran would have passed on Justin Pugh.
Your first sentence is pretty daunting.

Wildhack said in an interview a few weeks ago that we only do one year deals. So unlessl that has changed or he was lying, it's a one year deal.
Do you agree with this? I don’t know how to feel I don’t want Calvin Russell on a one year deal or johntay cook or Steve or a lot of these young great players we are getting.

It's definitely concerning when you have players you do want to keep as opposed to someone like Collins who might not be living up to his paycheck.

Here is the article that talks about it if you are a subscriber

Steve will be fine. We will bring in a QB, load up on DL and LB. Spend on a pass rusher and fill 2nds with this year's youth and incoming frosh.
I think that 39 is going to be RB 2.
I also believe that Steve with this wr room has a chance to finish in the top 10 in passing. IF we can land two stud interior DL and one good pass rusher we have a solid chance to make a run.

Would you go in the portal for an OL? Feels like we could get better there. I'm not sure I'd bank on the same guys being more experienced.

Yes . If we can add a true starter I would. As far as money goes if you have a good QB with our WR group we have a chance in every game.
On D need someone who can bring pressure. Need size up front and another starting level LB.
Pay QBs
LT
Center
DT
Edge.

Retain top returning starters.
Fill 2nd 3rd level with youth.
Need 3 solid cbs
2 solid S

Spend on two game ready QBs. I'd buy a starting QB who has won and experience from an FBS program over a HS star who is sitting at a power 4 program. Pay for the kids from NDSU or Villanova Wagner Maine or an Ivy that is smart and can execute.

I think your point about adding to the QB room with a player who has a history of success at an FBS program makes sense. Still need to scout P4 programs for talent, e.g. Angeli types (McCord was a one off unicorn). As we know, that latter strategy comes with risk. HS QBs willingly to come here will more than likely be on a developmental curve. We are not far enough along as a program not to have some level of experience in the QB room.

The chorus of "nobody with talent is going to come here to sit" has merit. But...Angeli did and wasn't promised a starting spot. We was willing to bet on himself and compete for QB1. That is what you sell. The opportunity to compete. I'm not naive enough to think that will be easy or even likely to happen. But, it is a model for who we should be looking at in the portal.

I agree. I would prefer to bet on a kid who has proven at a lower level than a hs star who has set at p4.
Steve had solid film our QB knew him extremely well and he looked great in a playoff game. If I'm Fran I'm scouting every fcs qb in the country and spending my money there. Same with the LB position. Look at Bryant. If they have measurable and produced I'm a buyer over HS creds that haven't played.

Shapen? Isn't he is out of eligibility after this season?
Yeah. I was thinking he only played 4 games this year but its not. ESPN has screwed up its stats section so badly it takes work not to figure out the game logs
