ORLANDO, Fla. – For the second straight game, the No. 19/22 Syracuse University women's basketball team will take on a nationally-ranked opponent when it plays No. 18/21 Michigan State on Sunday afternoon at the Florida Sunshine Classic. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m. in Warden Arena on the campus of Rollins College in Orlando, Fla.

In its most recent game, Syracuse suffered a 74-72 setback to No. 9/9 Baylor on Dec. 19 in the opening game of the Florida Sunshine Classic. The Orange led with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, but could not hold on against the Lady Bears.

Michigan State marks the third nationally-ranked opponent Syracuse has faced during the 2014-15 season. In its two previous games against top-25 opponents, the Orange lost by four to No. 1/2 South Carolina, 67-63, at the Junkanoo Jam and defeated by No. 9/9 Baylor, 74-72, at the Florida Sunshine Classic.

Spark off the Bench
Senior guard Diamond Henderson has served the 2014-15 Syracuse women's basketball teams as a spark off the bench thus far this season. Henderson ranks third on the team in scoring and 30th in the ACC at 11.4 points per game.

Henderson showed what she could do against the nation's elite on Dec. 19 against No. 9/9 Baylor at the Florida Sunshine Classic. She scored a season-best 27 points on 5-of-7 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc against the Lady Bears. It marked the first time that a member of the Orange eclipsed the 25-point plateau since Brianna Butler scored 25 points at Boston College on Feb. 16, 2014.

In her second game in an Orange uniform, Henderson exploded for 22 points in 22 minutes of play at Duquesne. The Kennesaw, Ga. native was a perfect 3-for-3 from downtown against the Dukes and was 5-for-6 from the free throw line. Against Vermont on Dev. 1, Henderson led the team with 16 points off the bench. Including her first three seasons at Tennessee Tech, Henderson has scored in double-figures on 61 different occasions.

Against the Best
With No. 18/21 Michigan State on the slate next, Syracuse will play a nationally-ranked opponent for the third time this year. Syracuse took No. 1/2 South Carolina to the wire at the Junkanoo Jam on Nov. 28. The Orange led with two minutes remaining against the top-ranked Gamecocks, but ultimately suffered a 67-63 setback. Against No. 9/9 Baylor, Syracuse once again led with less than two minutes to go, but lost 74-72 on Dec. 19 at the Florida Sunshine Classic.

Under head coach Quentin Hillsman, Syracuse owns a 10-45 mark (.182) against top-25 competition. The team's latest win against a top-25 team came on Jan. 30, 2014 against No. 6/6 North Carolina. The Orange recorded a 78-73 victory on the road in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Dating back to last season, Syracuse's last three losses have all been to top-15 opposition. The Orange has lost by a combined 11 points to No. 10/11 Kentucky, No. 1/2 Baylor, and No. 9/9 Baylor. In addition, the club has played all of those games without 2013-14 season leading scorer Brittney Sykes.

Series Breakdown
Sunday afternoon's matchup marks the first meeting all-time between Syracuse and Michigan State. It marks the fourth team Syracuse has seen for the first time during the 2014-15 season. The Orange are a perfect 3-0 against first-time opponents this year, defeating Jacksonville, East Carolina, and North Carolina Central.

ORLANDO, Fla. – The No. 19/22 Syracuse University women's basketball team suffered an 89-76 loss to No. 18/21 Michigan State on Sunday afternoon at the Florida Sunshine Classic. Syracuse trailed by two points with six minutes remaining, but would not cut any closer in its third loss of the season.

For the second straight game, Syracuse (8-3) took on a nationally-ranked foe. The score was tied at the half, but Michigan State (8-3) shot 59 percent from the field in the second half en route to its eighth win of the year.

Four players scored in double-figures for the Orange in the final game of the Florida Sunshine Classic. Junior guard Brianna Butler led the team in scoring with 18 points. Senior guard Diamond Henderson earned all-tournament accolades after another solid outing, tallying 16 points. Junior forward Taylor Ford set a season-high with 14 points.

Redshirt sophomore forward Aerial Powers led the Spartans with 32 points on the day, the best individual outing by an opposing player thus far this season. Powers also pulled down a team-high 17 rebounds.

Henderson picked up right where she left at the Florida Sunshine Classic. The senior guard spearheaded an early Syracuse 7-0 run, recording two fast-break lay-ups and one 3-point field goal, to give the club a 11-4 lead with 15:07 remaining in the half. She finished with a team-high nine points after the opening 20 minutes of play.

Down four points with 9:23 remaining in the opening period, Michigan State went on a 9-0 run to take a 27-22 lead with 6:50 left in the half. Syracuse chipped away at the Spartan lead, eventually tying it up, 31-31, off a jumper from sophomore guard Alexis Peterson with four seconds remaining. It marked the first time during the 2014-15 season that the Orange had not led at halftime.

Out of the half, it was a back-and-forth contest. A Butler 3-point field goal with 14:18 remaining gave the Orange a 43-41 lead, but that would be the last time the squad would hold an edge against Michigan State.

Syracuse would get as close as two points following a free throw from Peterson with 6:06 left in regulation, but would not get any closer. Butler recorded a 3-point play to make it 75-70 game with 3:47 to play, which ultimately was the Orange's final field goal.

Peterson joined Henderson on the All-Florida Sunshine Classic Team. She finished the game with 15 points.

The Syracuse women's basketball team will have the week off and will not play again until Sunday, Dec. 28 against in-state foe Cornell. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. in the Carrier Dome against the Big Red.

Powers explodes for 32 points, leads No. 18 Michigan State past Syracuse in 89-76 win

By Josh HyberStaff Writer

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Aerial Powers stood with her right arm frozen in the air and her right hand curled toward the basket – a picturesque follow-through on a fundamentally sound 3-point basket.
Powers’ triple with 4:45 left in regulation gave No. 18 Michigan State an eight-point lead, all-but securing a victory over No. 19 Syracuse.
The only thing Powers didn’t do at Warden Arena on Sunday was sell concessions. In the first half alone, the first-team All-Big Ten selection from a year ago scored 14 points, grabbed eight rebounds – three offensive – and picked up three steals.
“Aerial is a very good player in transition, is very good in the mid-range, and does a very good job at getting into the killer spots on the floor,” Syracuse head coach Quentin Hillsman said. “She did a good job at getting to the spots where she can score and she did a very good job rebounding.”
Powers finished with a career-high 32 points, 17 rebounds, four steals and three blocks, leading the Spartans (8-3) to an 89-76 victory over SU (8-3) in the final game of the Florida Sunshine Classic on the campus of Rollins College.
For the second time in three days, the Orange went down to the wire with a Top-25 team, and for the third time this season, lost against a Top-25 team in the final minutes.
“It’s encouraging because you know you’re just as good, but it’s also discouraging because you know you probably should have come out with the ‘W’,” Syracuse guard Diamond Henderson said. “For however minutes we didn’t go hard or a situation happened in the game, that’s what’s discouraging about it.”
With Michigan State leading 31-27 with 2:27 to go in the first half, Powers flew through the lane and intercepted an inbounds pass, then threw a slick pass to a cutting Tori Jankoska underneath. Jankoska made the layup, but missed the free throw after being fouled by SU’s Cornelia Fondren.
Powers, backpedaling toward half court, let out a scream while raising her right hand for a high-five with Jankoska. Moments later, Powers blocked a Henderson jump shot and made one of her own on the other end, giving the Spartans a 39-35 lead heading into the half.
“We just didn’t do a good enough job of containing her,” Syracuse’s Brianna Butler said. “She’s a good player all-around and we knew that coming into the game. We just made her a better player today.”
With the score knotted at 43 six minutes into the second half, Powers drove coast-to-coast with Butler in front of her. Butler hacked Powers, who made the shot and the ensuing free throw.
With Syracuse trailing and Butler still mired in her season-long shooting woes, it was forward Taylor Ford who answered time and time again for the Orange down the stretch. The junior scored a season-high 14 points, with nine of them coming in the second half.
Ford made a layup with 9:03 left in regulation to cut a five-point deficit to three at 59-56. Twenty seconds later, she made a top-of-the-key jumper, once again, bringing the Orange to within three. Two minutes later, the forward hit another jump shot to bring the Orange to within two, at 65-63.
“We were down by a couple of points, so I was just trying to do what I could do so we could get back up,” Ford said.
But from there, Michigan State went on a 7-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Jankoska to extend Michigan State’s lead to 72-65.
Fittingly, Powers made four free throws in the final 37 seconds to put the game away, handing the Orange its second consecutive loss and third overall against a ranked opponent.
“To lose by a little bit in the last minutes of the game, it’s kind of hard on us,” Butler said. “The good thing is that we’re able to compete with these big-time schools. But we have high expectations to do better.”
