There's been some chatter recently that our program needs to have 2 viable QBs ready to perform so that an injury doesn't completely derail the season. Hard to argue with that.

The thing that sucks is that's exactly how this roster should have worked out. We got one semi-proven guy in the portal, and one upside guy that hadn't played much, and we brought in a freshman QB that was able to participate in spring ball.

As richmondcuse03 noted before, the whiff was on the evaluation of Collins. Now we seem to also see the staff hesitant to hand Carney the ball.

I'm not sure what more we could have done. Gotten a better transfer than Collins? Sure, but how would we have known, and the guy would have wanted to be here. Gotten a better incoming freshman than Carney? Sure, but who would we have needed to get that the staff would have trusted more than it seems they do Carney right now?

We got the situation we said we needed, it just hasn't worked out. Not sure what else you can do.

Washington would have been the home run get. Once he was gone what happened? I see Kentucky got two QBs we were interested in. Would they have been better than Carney? Any story with these two?

For next year how the heck did we lose a NJ kid to Washington? Maybe that Auburn kid will be available given a potential coaching change.

Why can Pitt get a Top 50 QB every year (do next year as well)? Or BC get these kids too?

Yes and yes?

Both will develop and get better. This is their first real taste of college football.

But this is also the be better right away era of college football. So yes, should have found someone more game ready than Collins. And should have landed a higher ranked recruit than Carney. The only nearby school that gave him a sniff was Arkansas.

This is the situation of our making. So we have no choice but to endure the growing pains. They'll both be better next year, if they even stay. Nothing we can do now but wait.

On paper, I think our stable of QBs coming in was fine. Not great, but fine. Obviously would have wanted Angeli earlier, but that's life and these things never work perfectly.

And Rickie was recruited by big schools and when he left LSU he seemingly left on good terms with the program. LSU fans wanted him to succeed with the understanding that since Nuss was coming back, he wouldn't want to wait another year.

The "but" is that upon watching Rickie for a few games now, he is making mistakes that are glaring and really feel like Rickie has been living on "upside" for a while now. There are missed throws that are way off. There are times where he's making errant reads that you would expect a decent HS QB to make.

And that last piece is what is shocking to me. Because he was not only named starter but then was a solid #2 when Angeli beat him out. And I would expect at least some modicum of decent play. I don't need all world stats. And I get that 1) him being named starter was likely nominal and 2) guys do under perform when it comes to games vs practice. But he *really* seems like playing QB is almost foreign to him at times. He'll always make a couple of throws that look the part of a superstar because of his innate traits, but holy cow he otherwise looks like he is an actor playing a QB.

So I think I agree with you. And I believe what you wrote is 100% fair and accurate. But Rickie seems so out of his element as the backup who at one point was the starter that it seems like the evaluation of him must have been practice environment super performance. Which, hey, may be the case.
