We have seen the last of Coleman

offensively I think he's already much better than Baye or Rakeem, but his defense is what's gotten him pulled out in every game. He's been out of position many times, leading to easy baskets...and I wouldn't be surprised if Boeheim believes that we need to win with our D this year more than our offense.

That said, I would have liked to seen him get more minutes in hopes that his D improved as the year went on. Love his energy and I think he's going to develop into a very strong low post player.

His shooting percentage and turnover rate don't jibe with that.

It's true that his defense is what's gotten him pulled. His offense would probably improve with more minutes, but he can't get more minutes until he defends better (which he also won't learn to do without more minutes). He's stuck in a tough spot.

He will be fine. Work your ass off in the off season, drop a few pounds and commit to the gym and he will be worlds better in the fall. If he does this he cant fail.

Trouble is, he did this last spring and summer. He worked hard, was at the Fayetteville Y every day.

No doubt that he needs to drop the weight, but it goes further than that. Zhanjuzi touched on it - his fundamentals are poor. Coleman's going to need some good instruction and a ton of practice and game reps to relearn the post game.

And hopefully he can supplement his gym routine with some other changes. His work ethic is admirable, but it didn't do the trick this year.

I mean attend camps, get more instruction and continue to hit the weight room.

Yeah, that'll be key. Not sure why no one recognized this problem last year, but he can be very successful here if the coaching staff works to help him cure that hitch.

It pains me to agree with the OP. Because I want to see DC2.

The bulk of the small odds for DC2 seem to be with a blow out.

My case for DC2 in the first half of the Montana game would be for the following reasons:
First for foul management. Getting DC2 in for 4-5 minutes in the first half has pretty much assured that there is no real foul trouble for our bigs. We have seen many times this season when not using DC2 in the first half, foul problems for Rak and BMK. One scenario for MT to stay in this thing is to attack and try to get to the FT line. Having DC2 in there for a while limits the damage of that strategy.
Secondly, MT is thin with bigs. Our guards used to try and feed DC2 in the post. Doing this against MT could have very good consequences. If the game is being called tight, which MT wants to get to the line, the post moves by DC2 could result in similar calls against MT's bigs. Getting their thin front court in foul trouble should affect their aggressiveness.
Third, one listed reason for DC2s adjustment problems have been his playing against bigger players instead of the smaller high school players. Well, MT is small.

So, yes, it is still tough for me to accept the reality of the OP.

Someone would have a tough time convincing me that Coleman can get to the level of Ricky or Arinze depending on where he ends ups. To me both were much better basketball players. I don't see much from Coleman at this point but next year is the big year for him, He lacks athleticism and size is good but at this level won't get you over the top.

I have a feeling you remember senior Arinze and Ricky and are comparing them to frosh DC. At the same stage in their careers, DC's skill set is higher, and it's not even close.

If you think DC lacks athleticism, then IMO, you haven't really watched him. The kid is 280 and has a wonderful skill set, much higher than either of the other two.

I've been watching cuse hoops for for many decades and don't recall a big man, ever, that came in with the ability to board and outlet (a great skill) as good as DC.

Once he gets comfortable with keeping the ball up, spacing, and most importantly, learning D, he will be a force by mid-junior year.

I like to believe Boeheim is planning on using him as a secret weapon. How much film is out there with Coleman playing against high-level competition? Against any competition, really. I'm going with the conspiracy theory that the "knee surgery" was just intense training for the tournament, repeating the same three post moves over and over and over again. No one will be prepared or expecting him to start scoring all of these points after getting basically no playing time all year.

Agree, DC had a short hook bc because he was out of position in the middle of the zone, something boheim doesn't tolerate. I would think in two years he will be a force, and If he doesn't play against Montana its because they won't want to have him hurt his knee before next year

I think this all relates to the knee and the surgery. If he really is a future pro prospect, and maybe the knee is still giving him some trouble, then I understand not bringing him back too fast. He went into some games, and maybe reported something about it that has led them not to play him. If he played poorly it could be because of that. Also he needs to get his body back into game shape, which I assume is harder for a big center coming back from an injury, especially a freshman center. Come back to me next year at this time if things don't drastically change for him next season. And I don't count him out for some playing time this season.

For the year is my guess. Wont sniff any pt just like miguel carter williams last year in the tourney.

It's better for him and the team in the long run to concentrate on a full rehab of his knee. We don't need him at this point, and he's not in a position to help the team right now based on conditioning. I trust the coaches on this one.

I totally agree.

I think a lot of that will depend on what Coleman does with his conditioning and weight. I would love to see him drop some pounds and add a little explosiveness to his game. There were way too many times when he was under the rim and either got stuffed by opposing centers/forwards because he would just bunny hop for a layup or got stripped by opposing guards because he tried to put it on the floor for a single dribble (I know that often had to do with his position when he got the ball though). There was one occasion where Coleman went up strong for the dunk and I loved seeing that from him. That's what he needs to get used to doing. I don't think Coleman will ever be what Rick was for us, but I wouldn't completely rule out seeing Coleman develop into a sort of AOv2, just with more finesse to his game rather than always "big boying" the defender to get his points.
Coleman can get in better shape, but he worked very hard last summer, lost a quite a bit of weight, he is never going to be slim, I don't think that's a big problem for him, look at the guy on Marquette. He's a body type that is becoming common in bball. I also love that some people's memories of past SU players is what they remember from the senior year. Arinze didn't get playing time until at least his junior year, and was a starte his senior year. Does anyone remember Rick's "great" game against Butler when Arinze was hurt, it was pathetic. Both became more finished at the end than they were in the beginning. Dajuan has a huge upside

I'd love to see DC2 train with Arinze over the summer. Arinze really overhauled his body between his Junior and Senior years. I would love for him to get in DC2's ear and tell him/show him how he did it. Anybody who doesn't think DC2's ceiling is well above Arinze, doesn't know basketball.

I can see DC getting time against Marquette if that match up happens. Their big bowling ball center could not just push him out of the way.

NO!

I know it was only the Grizz, but good to see. Jimmy is getting him ready. Hope to see him against Cal.
yes sir good to see him gain valuable playing time experience. pays dividends.

Anybody else think he looked slimmer? Seriously - I thought his face looked much thinner than at the beginning of the year.

I know it was Montana. But any questions on his health and conditioning (he looked slim) were answered last night. He can definitely give us minutes in this tourney.

He still is too slow getting off the ground... he got packaged a couple of times by the Montana guys... something that should never happen given the athletic discrepancy between the two teams. He's just not explosive enough at this point in his maturity.

He definitely looked slimmer. He is quick but last night used it in a productive way rather than the spazzy way he was reacting with the ball early on. Definitely a nice showing by the big fella. I still think we won't see him again unless we get up 25 on someone.
