We need a real AD like yesterday...

Personally, I think that retiring the #44 was the worst idea ever thought of.. Yes, it has historical significance to the University and to ALL the players who wore it. This is why I think the theory the basketball team uses is best. Retire the jersey, not the number. Give prominence to the person, not the number. There should be a separate ceremony every home game this season to retire each 44 that deserves to be in the rafters individually.

Then maybe we, the Syracuse community, should engage him and send his a$$ back to New Jersey tar and feathered. (In response to 24 above)
We are in trouble when some west coast slick acting as AD retires 44, sabotage by USC. Then we get this boy from Jersey Rutgers grad pretending to be a Syracuse homer stabbing everything Syracuse in the back all the time. I do not trust the Chancellor from Georgetown either.... at least when it comes to athletics.
Retiring 44 in conjunction with the hiring of Robinson was the equivalent of castrating a football program that was being slowly strangled

Brent Axe isn't a journalist, he's not a reporter according to Syracuse.com ironically he's called a "Community Engagement Specialist - Sports" for their digital operations. He's not even noted as a commentator nor as a columnist on their website. I guess Axe believes that the best way to engage the community with sports is to assume the role of a negative or controversial opinion pundit. He's been given a venue that he's using to vent his own personal opinion while needing clicks to preserve his existence. So I don't click.

Axe's been fighting the restore 44 movement for ages (this article is 6 and a half years old) so he's just looking for anything to try to validate his own agenda and personal opinion while generating job saving clicks. Uggh

Actually, he's an idiot.

Un-retiring a number, particularly one with so much historic significance, is always going to be risky. It's a tough time to do it with a temporary AD. But they took the right steps going to JB and FL. Others have worn the number, but if those two (most famous) players didn't have a problem with it, I don't see why fans should be up in arms about it.

I'm not saying that hanging a number doesn't mean something .. but Syracuse needs a boost. FB is at a crossing point, struggling to be competitive in a new conference. We need talent and one of the best ways to sell recruits -- and to remind them of the storied history of SU FB along the way -- is to give out #44 again.

Not only is this not an insult to Jim Brown or Floyd Little (or others who wore it), I think it freshens our memory of SU's tradition. It reminds us how special it is to have a number worn by two hall of fame players that suited up for the orange. That can't be a bad thing at this stage of the program.
