Personally, I think that retiring the #44 was the worst idea ever thought of.. Yes, it has historical significance to the University and to ALL the players who wore it. This is why I think the theory the basketball team uses is best. Retire the jersey, not the number. Give prominence to the person, not the number. There should be a separate ceremony every home game this season to retire each 44 that deserves to be in the rafters individually.
Then maybe we, the Syracuse community, should engage him and send his a$$ back to New Jersey tar and feathered. (In response to 24 above)
We are in trouble when some west coast slick acting as AD retires 44, sabotage by USC. Then we get this boy from Jersey Rutgers grad pretending to be a Syracuse homer stabbing everything Syracuse in the back all the time. I do not trust the Chancellor from Georgetown either.... at least when it comes to athletics.
Retiring 44 in conjunction with the hiring of Robinson was the equivalent of castrating a football program that was being slowly strangled
