We need more from Naithan George

The other PG we tried to get from the portal, Dedan Thomas, is killing it at LSU. He’s a really good scorer and passer and his strength is driving into the lane. He’s shorter than George so we would have given up some height at the position, and George has proven to be a pretty good defender and a decent 3-point shooter. I’m hoping he’ll improve a lot before we start conference play.

Looking at LSUs schedule the have played absolutely no one. Crazy to think they’d schedule that poorly

Some here also wanted Desmond Claude who isn't lighting the world on fire at all for UW.

You beat me to it

I love refuting these posts. LSU has played a murderers row of Drake, Depaul, and BC, most of the other teams I've never heard of. He should be killing it.

George faced off against 4 top 15 kenpom defenses in 11 days. yes he has to be better but come on.

Yeh agreed. Not saying George has been good so far but his stats I imagine would look similar to Thomas with that schedule

Well his main problem was definitely his complete inability to hit any sort of jump shot. I thought complaints about the turnovers were a little overblown. He made some bonehead plays but a lot of good ones. Was a good defender too. But it's not all on our staff that we "failed to control him." A big part of that is on Q too. He is responsible for his academic issues and he often seemed mentally checked out. Personal responsibility is a thing. It's not just all on the coaches.
You're right. I was down on the staff in general at that time so I gave them a lot of blame and because he seemed fine under jb. Part of the job is managing tough personalities, but it's a mix of management responsibility and, at a point, personal responsibility for the students. And I thought the Board was way too hard on him, calling him a bad kid because he jokingly interrupted a presser and stuff.

If Q was serviceable from 3, he'd be very very good in my opinion. But we need guards and wings who can shoot if we want to be good.

Nait George is better and he should be good in conference play.

With that said I was a huge Quadir defender. People's complaints against him were overblown. We failed to control him. He's a good player with a few flaws. One thing is for sure -- would have been a hell of a lot better at PG than Carlos last year. Wish we could have kept him eligible and in control because he's a lot of fun to watch especially if we could have had him off the bench this year (although he probably would've left anyway this year when we recruited over him with Nait).
Gotta go to class tho lol

He played well the first four games but not in Vegas.

I think the weak competition early masked a lot with him. I've been concerned with his play all year long. I really didnt watch Georgia Tech at all last year but I would be curious to know the differences between how they play and how we do, because George is pretty clearly struggling with some kind of adjustment here.

In our past four games against good-to-great opponents, he was 7-29 from the field, 3-18 from three, 15 assists vs. 17 turnovers. With some very questionable decision making at critical junctures of games.

He started attacking the basket and made way too late of an entry pass on the most important possession of the season thus far vs. Houston. Obviously it worked out at the end, but he took a very ill-advised jump shot on one of our last offensive possessions last night. And on fast breaks, I don't quite trust his decision making much of the time.

I know he's capable of playing better, which is why I write this. His role as a floor general is absolutely critical if we want to turn our resume around and make the tournament.
Let's hope he can turn things around very soon! Need a great floor general.

Then you are clinically insane lol

Edit - Wait I may have spoke too soon. How the hell is Q going off this year?? Put up some major numbers against some good teams. What in the hell??
id rather have quadir from freshman year than some of the performances george has put up vs these big 12 and SEC teams. at least quadir wouldnt back down and sometimes goes off.

george vs tenn: 2 pts, 1-7 fg, 3 assist 4 turnovers, 35 mins

YUCK

q would best that in his sleep

even "bad" Q

this years Q blows that out of the water

i mean georges line vs tenn is basically carlos

I think, unfortunately, that George is simply not particularly good. If he can hit a couple jumpers, throw a couple alley-oops and not turn the ball over it's a good game from him

Q was my favorite player his last year at SU. I always said reminded me of Scoop with more panache. Needed to mature but when he did you had something really good. I am thrilled for him that he is putting the energy and natural talent together with increased maturity. Good for him.

You’re out of your mind.

lol Carlos would be getting destroyed on defense. At least George isn’t doing that.

Nate has been a turnover machine, too many unforced turnovers. Sloppy for a starting guard.
I think he is adjusting to the speed of the game IE, Red has them running hard.

Hope he doesn't have a game like this against us (except the L).

He’s been in the ACC for two years and led it in assists last year.

The next five games are the perfect time to get much more comfortable and in command. I really think come January he will be what we thought he would be.

George looks good against lesser athletes as he can pretty much get to where he wants to go. Against the better athletes on the teams we have been recently playing, his lack of athleticism begins to show. He gets cut off on drives and then gets stuck under the hoop. He has passes deflected from the top of the key area. He falls alot when dribbling under even medium pressure. He does have skill but that skill doesn't have a chance to be utilized against the top teams. I think he will be fine when we settle into bulk ACC play but his warts will again flare up (Gross) when we face the Dukes and Carolinas of the world.

I hope he improves, but this is the time to get Fennell some minutes so he can hopefully get some experience playing the position against softer competition.

If George doesn't get his game together, I don't want us to be in the same situation that Fran experienced when Angeli got hurt.

I think the appearance of him improving will be noticeable as we enter this crap part of the schedule. But its not going to be real.

He had better numbers in conference play than non conference play last year. 13.5/6.5.
This is why his mediocre play has been baffling. The guy had double-digit assists against 4 ACC teams last season. He had five 20+ point games and all were against conference opponents.

He shouldn't need to adjust or settle in. His season so far has really made no sense.

Stats on a mediocre team can be deceiving.

I think what we're seeing is that George is a little overrated. Great passer, great court vision -- so in transition, he excels. When we played the tomato cans early, he was able to push the ball, make exciting passes, and distribute the ball.

Against better teams -- especially the ones that got in his shorts defensively -- his lack of speed was a liability. He allowed those good defensive teams to bait him into dribbling into double teams where he often got trapped, and had to leave his feet to try to throw the ball back outside.

I'm disappointed by his inability to get into the paint. Needs to improve. And a big part of why we struggle to score so much in our half court offensive sets.
