Young Macky

Macky MacPherson Gets Mini-Camp Invite From Philadelphia Eagles (PS; Mink)

Syracuse center Macky MacPherson accepted an invitation to attend mini-camp with the Philadelphia Eagles he said Tuesday night via text message, becoming the latest SU football player with a chance to pursue his professional dreams.

MacPherson is hoping to parlay his ability to serve as a back-up lineman and potential long snapper into a roster spot despite the fact that he went undrafted last weekend. Physically he is a good fit with Chip Kelly's up-tempo Eagles despite having a reputation for being undersized.

None of Philadelphia's three centers listed on their active roster are taller than 6-foot-3 and none weigh more than 300 pounds. On his pro day, MacPherson said he was just over 6-foot-1 and weighed 306 pounds.

Macky on Mini-Camp Invite: 'You Can't Ask for More than an Opportunity' (PS; Carlson)

Macky MacPherson is the latest of seven Syracuse seniors to find an open spot with an NFL team. It was the only team he heard much from following the NFL Draft.

He'd seen two teammates get drafted and four others latch on with NFL teams before the Philadelphia Eagles began ringing his phone on Monday afternoon. MacPherson is smart enough to know these aren't exactly wonderful signs for the future. He insists he's not going to let it dampen the present.

"It's not a contract or anything," MacPherson said. "It's a tryout. But it's an opportunity. You can't ask for more than an opportunity."

Jeremi Wilkes (28)

Jeremi Wilkes to Sign as Free Agent with Jacksonville Jaguars (PS; Mink)

Former Syracuse safety Jeremi Wilkes will join the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent, he told syracuse.com in a text message on Tuesday.

Wilkes will be the fourth ex-Syracuse player to make it into an NFL rookie camp as an undrafted free agent. He joins fellow defensive backs Keon Lyn (Colts), Ri'Shard Anderson (Titans) and running back Jerome Smith (Falcons).

Syracuse had two players drafted last weekend. Defensive tackle Jay Bromley was picked in the third round by the New York Giants, and linebacker Marquis Spruill was selected in the fifth round by the Atlanta Falcons.

Shy Cullen Says Syracuse is His Top School (orangefizz.net; admin)

Just how shy is Shyheim Cullen? Based on The Fizz’s conversation with the Lowell, Massachusetts linebacker, he’s quite the opposite. Cullen is very not shy about his confidence that Syracuse, the lone FBS School to offer him, leads his recruiting services.

Watch Cullen’s 2013 season highlights here.

The six-foot, 215-pound Cullen has other East Coast D-I schools interested in him, including Boston College, UConn, UMass, Temple, Rutgers, New Hampshire, Maine and Rhode Island. Defensive coordinator Chuck Bullough and linebackers coach Clark Lea contacted Cullen back on April 30th to extend the Lowell HS junior an offer. Bullough likes what he sees, according to Shy:

“He said I definitely fit their defense. They saw that I could make some amazing plays, and that’s something they like at Cuse.”

Notre Dame AD Pleased with ACC Partnership (Orlando Sentinel; Jones)

Notre Dame is set to begin its second season in the Atlantic Coast Conference - in all sports except football - and according to the school's athletic director, the overall process has been good.

On the value of playing an eight-or-nine game conference schedule in the new College Football Playoff

“I think the committee has been fairly clear and [College Football Playoff Executive Director] Bill [Hancock] has that you’ll be able to evaluate strength of schedule independent of that question, it’s who you play. It’s what you do. It’s how strong a conference is in any particular year. It’s what you do in those other games. I have no idea how the committee will ultimately measure it. But they’ve been pretty clear that there is no one way or one approach.”

On Notre Dame’s first season in the ACC

“It’s been spectacular. It’s just a challenge to figure out how to make the integration work. The patience everybody has demonstrated and the good-will has just been unbelievable. We’ve been so pleased. The thing I heard over-and-over again from our coaches was the challenge of having every trip being a new trip this year. You get used to everything from the hotel, to the venue to scouting and you had to learn it all. We did fine, but it was trial by fire.”
