Athlon Sports Ranks Dwight Freeney #38 Best Player of BCS Era (PS; Mink)

...
The group ranked Freeney as its 38th-best player of the era and eighth among defensive linemen, behind Nebraska's Ndamukong Suh (No. 3), Georgia's David Pollack (No. 12), Arizona State's Terrell Suggs (No. 13), LSU's Glenn Dorsey (No. 14), North Carolina's Julius Peppers (No. 17), Tennessee's John Henderson (No. 18) and Virginia Tech's Corey Moore (No. 35).

Starring during the glory years of Orange football, Freeney left school as a two-time, first-team All-Big East performer after setting the conference's single-season sack record (17.5). He finished with a school-record 34 career sacks and, at one point, posted 17 consecutive games with at least one QB takedown. His record-setting 2001 campaign made him a unanimous All-American and he finished ninth in the Heisman voting.

ACC's Top QBs Ranked (fansided.com; Melnick)

#6 Terrell Hunt Syracuse

After throwing just four combined passes in the Syracuse Orange’s first two games (a 23-17 loss to the Penn State Nittany Lions and a 48-27 loss to the Northwestern Wildcats), Hunt took over as the starting quarterback and the Orange offense show immediate improvement, topping 50 points in each of their next two games. Although there were some bad losses (like a 56-0 defeat at the hands of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets), Hunt navigated the Orange to a 6-6 regular season, capped by a 21-17 victory over the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the Texas Bowl.

On the season, Hunt completed 167 of 273 passes for 1,638 yards with 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He rushed for another 500 yards and seven touchdowns on 106 carries.

Past and Future Centers for Syracuse Meet as Macky is Congratulated by Miller

Get to Know Your Orangemen: #56 John Miller (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Note that Miller's primary position is actually center, not guard

Name: John Miller

Position: Offensive Guard

Year: Junior

Height: 6'2"

Weight: 305

Hometown: Carson, Calif.

High School: Redondo Union High School

2013 Stats: Played in five games for Syracuse last year, though snaps have obviously been tough for offensive line reserves considering how deep and consistent we've been at the position.

2014 Projections: Miller is still listed as a reserve guard, but with some of the injuries this spring, he also got some time at center. If the Rob Trudo switch doesn't work out, Miller could end up slotting himself into that role.

Spring Update for Syracuse (nbcsports.com; Arnold w/ Cassillo)

In the first game of Notre Dame’s ACC scheduling pact, the Irish will face Syracuse, a somewhat familiar opponent in recent years. The Irish and the Orange have only faced off six times in the programs’ histories, but three of those games took place in the aughts (or whatever we’re calling the 2000-09), with Syracuse winning two of three.

Much has changed in the past decade for the Syracuse football program. After becoming one of the premier teams in the Big East behind Paul Pasqualoni and the offensive firepower of Donovan McNabb, things have trended downward in the Carrier Dome. The hiring of Greg Robinson was a disaster, winning just three conference games in his four seasons. And just as Doug Marrone got the Orange on track, he left to run the Buffalo Bills after an 8-5 season in 2012.

Syracuse decided to hire from within when they replaced Marrone, promoting defensive coordinator Scott Shafer. And with a 7-6 season under his belt that ended with a promising win over Minnesota in the Texas Bowl, things look to be on the upswing.

Wisconsin Gets Verbal From David Pfaff; Had SU Offer (buckys5thquarter.com; Rosin)
...
David Pfaff received his offer from the Badgers Tuesday and Pfaff committed quickly to the Badgers. Pfaff, a 6'3, 252 lb defensive lineman for Mequon Homestead is expected to bulk up and play defensive end when he comes to Madison, as he's a defensive tackle for his high school program. He received offers from Iowa State, Northern Illinois, Syracuse, and Wake Forest among others.

He also received interest from Illinois, Missouri, Michigan State and Ole Miss, but when the Badgers came around with an offer? Pfaff wrapped up his recruiting quickly.

"Today I was offered a full ride scholarship to the University of Wisconsin-Madison and committed," he said. "I can't explain my emotions right now."

Ryan Nassib Gunning for Backup QB Role with Giants (nydailynews.com; Abramson/Samuel)

The Giants’ quarterback room has grown crowded this offseason, thanks to the signing of Josh Freeman and the return of Curtis Painter. But none of that worries 2013 fourth-round pick Ryan Nassib, who doesn’t believe the moves put him on the hot seat.

“I don’t really see it as anything,” he said Tuesday. “It’s the same reason why they bring in guys for other positions. It’s just trying to create competition, trying to make guys better.”

Nassib served as the Giants’ third-stringer last season, but he’s gunning to back up Eli Manning in 2014, and new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo’s revamped system may help him. The new attack features quick-hitting West Coast principles, many of which Nassib knows from his days at Syracuse.

“It’s something that I’ve done in the past, which I kind of got away from last year,” he said. “The lessons that I’ve learned in the past are kind of becoming relevant again.

Westhill Names Casullo New Head Coach (PS; Webb)

Jamie Casullo has been hired as the new head football coach at Westhill High School.

Athletic director Matt Whipple confirmed Tuesday night that Casullo has been approved by the Westhill board of education to replace Gary Griffo, who coached the football team nine seasons. The school decided in March not to offer Griffo the job for the 2014 season.

Casullo, 33, is a graduate of Cicero-North Syracuse and has spent the last seven years as an assistant football coach at the University of Albany. He is the son of former Syracuse assistant coach Bob Casullo. His brother, Rocco, is the head coach of St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale.

That coaching pedigree, his professionalism and his experience with transitioning high players to was all attractive, said Whipple.

One Last Try to Turn Schwedes' Dream Into Reality: A New Field for JB Sports (cnycentral.com; Scheidell)

For Jodi and Scott Schwedes, Jamesville-Dewitt high school is a place that brings them back in time, but the high school sweethearts have mixed emotions when they come back to the field where Scott played football more than thirty years ago.

"I can honestly say that this is the worst field I've ever played on. Granted I've played on some nice fields, but it does have its inherent problems," says Scott Schwedes.

After playing at JD High, Scott played at the Syracuse University before playing pro football with the Miami Dolphins. He's played on his fair share of football fields and it makes him sad to see his teenage son, Michael, playing on that same field with those same problems.
