Week 5 of season specific reminiscing -- 1994

If I remember in the Oklahoma game, after SU took the late lead on a long TD, it was the first ever penalty after a celebration, as that rule just went into effect that season. The rules were in response to Miami (and others, but mostly Miami) pushing things so far. Half the bench ran down to party, with lots of helmets off. The flag moved the Kickoff back, so OU started at like the 45 or so when all they needed was a FG to win.

Yep, but they were also a running team with a new QB, and on that final drive I think they completed two 4th and double digit yardage plays to the sideline and got out of bounds.

It was a helpless feeling.

And that stupid Boomer Sooner playing on every down. It’s 25 years later and I still hate that song since that day.

Forgot about the two 4th down plays. Also wasn't it 24-0 Oklahoma at one point? I know it was a sizeable deficit.

Yep, halftime score. First half they came out and ran the ball. Had their own lighting and thunder combo. We couldn’t stop them. We tried to keep up. It looked like we were playing Switzer’s Sooners.

2nd half we adjusted and stopped them. And we went to the air on offense. Mostly to Marvin Harrison (why not). Should have been enough, but for one overdone celebration.

Man celebration penalty v Oklahoma. Late PI against Tennessee later on. Those were long rides home. Just brutal. Anyone recall who did the post games back then? We'd listen all the way until we lost reception somewhere on Rte 28.

Steve Hyder and Doug Logan stick in my head as the voices of the middle of the decade, but something tells me Hyder was hoops-only. Maybe Jim Ridlon?

Either way, 570 was great back then.

Between OU, Tennessee, Michigan, it was 3 big name games that got away. The victory parties would have been talked about to this day.

And of course, Miami 92, but that was more of the comeback that fell short. Can't point to something completely random (excess celebration, stupid knee pad calls, a safety where the QB ran back 30 yards that wouldn't be a safety today).

Ridlon sounds right, there were 2 I'm thinking of. This would have been the post post game show, after recaps and locker room stuff. Usually took to the phones an hour after the gun. The voices of our drive back north, embarrassed I don't recall for sure but I do think Ridlon was one.

I think Tennessee and Oklahoma would have been bigger than Michigan as we had beaten them recently (at the time) but man, all 3 were a kick in the gut and a quite walk out.

Tennessee would have been the biggest as they went undefeated and won it all that year. Michigan would be next as they finished #5 and won the Orange Bowl. Oklahoma was underwhelming that season for their standards going 6-6. They were incredible in the 80s, mediocre in the 90s, and then have been incredible from 2000 on.

Agreed that Oklahoma was not much that year or era but they were ranked for that game and I think it was prime time or national 3:30? Michigan finished well but even a win there is not bigger than beating them at their place when they were defending champs (granted , 0-1 defending champs). In each games specific moment I believe the OU game out ranks the Mich game in terms of missed big wins.

I want to say that game was prime time. I was drunk by game time So could be totally wrong

Kevin Mason > every Syracuse QB between McNabb and Dungey.

That year was a downer in some ways but we didn't know how good we had it.

Hmm...I’d take Nassib.

A portent of things to come: close wins against Rutgers and Temple. When we couldn't consistently beat them it cost Coach P his job.

Maybe as a senior, I could go either way. Nassib was good then. Any of his first three years, I'd roll the dice with Mason instead.

Second half of Mason’s 94 = Second half of Nassib’s 11. Offenses that just couldn’t do anything.

Nassib finished ‘12 strong though.

Oklahoma was definitely top 20 to open up the year. They had JUCO transfer Garrick McGee they were all excited about and by the end of the year he got benched. Pretty sure they finished poorly and Gary Gibbs ended up getting fired.

It was definitely the prime time night game on ESPN.

3 football falls out of Cuse, had seasons, added ECU and temple.

This is the year which laid the foundation for that epic 98 season where I would see them all in their 1st Championship Season since 1959!!!

Wait...

How did I miss the game 1 foreshadowing??...

This was a solid SU team that had no business not playing in a bowl game. The SU/OU opener, despite being a devastating loss, was one of the most exciting games in Dome history. This was probably the first year that Virginia Tech become a player on the national scene, and we took care of business against them.

Any other memories of note?

I am eagerly awaiting 2005 and our huge win over our in-state rival...
