Week 6 of season-specific reminiscing -- 1980

Wow, that would have been epic. On a scale with, or probably even bigger than Nebraska. What's the highest rated team we ever beat in a true road game? Va Tech when they were #4?

Road wins vs. ranked teams from the Media Guide, (the #s are ranking in the wrrter's poll/ ranking in the coach's poll):

10/26/40 We beat #20 Columbia 3-0 (The Coach's poll began in 1950).
10/15/55 We beat #18/#13 Army 13-0
10/28/55 We beat #13/#16 Holy Cross 49-9
11/19/55 We beat #13/#15 West Virginia 20-13 (You did not want to play SU if you were ranked #13 in 1955!)
9/22/56 We beat #6/UR Maryland 26-12 (The coach's poll didn't come out until after this game)
11/7/59 We beat #7/#7 Penn State 20-18
10/1/60 We beat #5/#5 Kansas 14-7
11/25/67 We beat #4/#4 UCLA 32-14

Love it, thanks for writing that up. If you consider both polls the win at UCLA in '67 is the highest ranked road win (they were #4 in both, Tech was #4 in one and #5 in the other)

outstanding nugget as always SWC!

I'm pretty sure you're correct. I can't think of a higher ranked true road win.
kansas in 1960 they were #5
UCLA 1967 they were #4

I see as usual SWC beat me

While the Joe Morris KO TD was phenomenal, I think my favorite part was the goal line stand late in the third quarter. I remember that the refs threatened Syracuse with a TO if the crowd didn't quiet down enough for Miami OH to get the play off. As soon as the refs backed away, the crowd noise just amped up.

It was extemely hot and humid in there that evening. I only remember two other times that hot. Central Florida in early 2000's and FSU 2018.

I still have the ticket stub packed away somewhere.

Well we lit the world on fire passing the ball that year.

3 TD’s to 18 Int’s

Makes Shrader look like Tom Brady :D

Vintage films and the Dome 44 years ago

This just posted 4 days ago...

What a treat with John Facenda!

These annual highlight films were so great. They made an 5-6 team look like an undefeated, unscored upon team. Surprisingly enough, this was not an NFL Films production. It was by Tel-Ra or something like that. I got to the end and was looking for the Sabols in the credits but it was done by another company. What's interesting was no mention of Coach Frank Maloney. That was Maloney's last season. I can never remember if he resigned or got fired but it was his last year.

Just imagine being in the Dome with a smoking father. ;) *

* smoking was allowed in the Dome when it first opened.
At least they offered beer to us 18 year olds as well. ;)

This was the inaugural season of the Carrier Dome. The season itself wasn't anything special -- we finished 5-6 and didn't go bowling. But I would love to hear about what the experience was like for the people who attended that first home game against Miami-OH.

-Who here attended that first game?
-What was the scene like outside the Dome? Did they have bands playing, a fair-like atmosphere, etc.?
-What were your first impressions upon walking in the Dome?

One thing that is very interesting to me is the bizarre fluctuations in our home crowds that year. We drew 50,564 for the opener, won the game, but only 34,749 wanted to show up the following week? But then we drew 50k crowds at the end of the year again.

I was fortunate enough to attend the first game in the dome. Sat in the 200 section near where the team enters the field. It was definitely humid in the dome. I don't think the staff knew to (or maybe were afraid the dome would deflate) bring in outside air as was often done later.

The dome was packed. It was hard to move through the concourses.

One odd thing I believe happened was SU's first kick-off. It was an onside kick. I don't think SU recovered the ball. One of the problems with Frank Maloney; he didn't know how to work with the fans. Instead of a thundering kick-off we got this anemic onside thing. Frank almost deflated the dome singlehandedly in that moment.
