Just as he does every week, Doug Marrone enters the room, goes from table to table shaking hands and engaging in conversations. Cuseregular, who incidentally brought his signed 1959 football offered it to Coach Marrone anytime he might think it would serve to help motivate the team or a player. Coach thanked him and shared that he has a room in his basement full of SU memorabilia. The football was quite an attraction as several avid SU fans stopped to admire it, check out Ernie Davis' signature along with a player or two who they knew from that team.

Matt Park informed us that Ricky Krautman was named Big East special teams player of the week and that Ryan Nassib was again named honorable mention for offense. Park also mentioned that ESPN was going to pick up our game against West Virginia and we all applauded. Matt mentioned the passing of Al Davis and said Syracuse took on the mantra of the Raiders owner Saturday night in New Orleans, "Just win." Without further adieu here is the head coach of your 4 & 2 Syracuse Orange, Doug Marrone. (Applause)

Doug spoke for a very long time and answered every question raised including one by Jake 65. Coach hits the road for two days of recruiting and he's going after some very important players. He then talked about how most teams that we play have break away players, in the case of West Virginia they have two. I sensed we are targeting some very high value recruits like that on Tuesday and Wednesday.

He said a few years ago we were recruiting and putting the best athletes on the defensive side of the ball. Now we're trying to put them on the offensive side.

There were about 55 people in the room and several school aged kids, it was Columbus Day, including one who asked about preventing blocked kicks. Doug thanked him for the good question then proceeded to answer him.

The team is as healthy as it's been all year. He said Orlando Fisher wasn't quite 100% so he held him out of the game. Chandler Jones will be engaging in full practices this week. They both should be ready when SU tries to maintain it's hold on the Schwartzwalder Trophy.

Doug was pleased with the play of AAM and said that he is now down to 234 pounds. He feels quite confident that Adonis can get us that one tough yard anytime he's in there. Marrone was very pleased with the bounce back effort of Bailey, who he called a great kid. There was no one feeling worse about the fumbles than Antwon. Doug was very happy for him. Coach said Nick Provo has done a good job of breaking some tackles.

Marrone addressed the concern that we don't put teams away. He said they talk it over as a team "It's about having the attitude to do it." He mentioned that we are undefeated when we don't turn the ball over, Saturday night we didn't turn the ball over.

Someone asked if there was a quarterback on the roster who could step in when Ryan graduates and Doug answered yes. It would be with a different system. He added we don't run Ryan a lot now but he does a fine job the few times he does. We try to keep him healthy.

Doug was asked what was the most satisfying thing about the job and he said it is when former players come back. "Coach I remember you told me how to handle a certain situation. That advice has helped me as an adult." He talked about some players he worked with who became all-pros who remembered the help he gave them. Doug went on to say how massive the the job of a head coach is. There are so many facets such as dealing with the press, handling the places that some kids come from. Recruiting, academics, the fans, the staff.

Someone asked Doug if he was recruiting offensive linemen who could get us into the top 25. The kind of linemen that Alabama recruits.

Right now, as you could well imagine HCDM is quite exhausted. The long road trip and the ungodly hours he spends doing analysis. Doug is a perfectionist, as he told us and that can take it's toll. Coach said he's either going to bring us a championship or he'll drop dead trying. I'm sure the bye week comes at exactly the right time for him as well as the players & staff. He said recruiting will re-energize him.

Doug said that SU moving to the ACC has definitely helped recruiting. He recounted how while he was with Tennessee he had to go through about 8 different channels to recruit one kid. He had to talk to the grandma, the parents, the pastor, his uncles, aunts and friends, the varsity coach and the JV coach who had more influence on the kid than anyone. All of this before he could even talk to the kid. Then he had to keep an eye on the private airstrip to make sure some other SEC school wasn't making one too many visits.

Marrone talked about doing things the right way. The NCAA allows 20 hours a week for the football program which includes practices, meetings and the weight room. He then asked Chris Gedney if it was that way when they played, neither of them could remember. Marrone said our kids now, know exactly how long they've practiced and aren't shy about reminding him. Doug said they always leave some extra time in case they need it for a meeting or some other thing to do with the team. He follows the rules by the book because he owes that obligation to the school, his family, especially his kids and the fans of the program. It's the only way .

Doug said we could be 1-5 right now but 4-2 is pretty good considering the skirmishes we've been in. He talked about how we beat Wake, who beat a very good, Florida State team. After we beat Toledo they went out and crushed a very good Temple team and walloped Eastern Michigan. He also added we should have beaten Rutgers who went on to trounce Pitt who bounced USF who had just beaten Notre Dame in South Bend when the Irish was in the top 10.

There will be no luncheon next week due to the bye.

Later!

Thanks for the report OE... I was bummed I couldn't make it today. The bye week is huge for this team right now. Will need to figure out how to sneak bath salts into the WVU locker room.

Did he say anything about WVU AD Luck's remarks re: Syracuse's football program doesn't compare to Air Force's and Navy's.

Thanks for posting.. very good to hear about recruiting.

"Someone asked if there was a quarterback on the roster who could step in when Ryan graduates and Doug answered yes. It would be with a different system."

Found this very interesting. Can't imagine he could say no to the question.

I like hearing that because it shows me he's willing to modify the system or scheme based on the talent that's here. Too many times coaches are stubborn and run one scheme no matter what.

We did run a spread option play to perfection for a TD, Nassib knew to hold the ball when the DE crashed down on the RB. Clearly a play we've practiced. Executed to perfection.

Thanks OE, great stuff, wish I could attend one of these someday.

I find that to be extremely confusing. Our CURRENT personnel says Spread. Yet we are going with a Pro Style running O. Why? If the current roster says Spread it out and create mismatches passing or run the ball out of the shotgun with speedy Bailey, PTG (before injury), and Rene then why the hell are we not doing it? Especially if that is our future O (unless he means we are going pure option like GA Tech)? His answer is even more frustrating to me.

recruits visited: hopefully McFarlane, Ron Thompson, Wayne Morgan, some Florida kids

Our current QB is not a spread QB.

Not a Spread option QB. But he can pass the ball in a Spread.
So why would you change the system to a spread passing when we have a pro style passing which is suited for his skills? Marrone knows more, I'll trust his assessment on which system is better for Nassib. And clearly the spread is not it.

Wow. If our future is Spread we will have both run and pass plays in the system. Not every play is an option. WV didn't run the option every play and they were kings of the Spread option. Geno Smith only ran the ball 6 times a game last year. Would it really be that difficult to take away 4-5 QB runs a game if our plan is the Spread option? That seems to make more sense than to run a system that has nothing to do with your future system. Why teach the young kids one system if they are not going to run it in 2 years? That is a waste of time developmentally.

I feel like I was there. Thanks for the report OE.

You exceed expectations. Well done OE.

That's not what he said. Marrone said that we have another QB on the roster that can step in when Ryan Nassib graduates, but that the QB would run a different system. Basically, he was saying that Ryan Nassib is our QB and he is more suited to the Pro Style offense, not the spread offense. If you look at the QBs that Marrone has recruited in the past 2 classes, I think between Kinder, Hunt, Miller, and Broyld it looks like we'll be transitioning to a spread style offense once Nassib (and Loeb) is gone.

If that's the case, then apparently Marrone is using the first couple of years to build the program back up and win as many games as possible in a more conservative fashion... and will then make adjustments to the offense going forward from there. It seems a bit of a round about way of doing things, but I guess he's just trying to use the pieces and talent he has to the maximum benefit instead of trying to force round pegs into square holes (pro style QB into spread offense).

Suppose the coached their exactly how you want them to, and were 1-5, would you be chill with that?

Do you even know what a Spread O is? because if you did you would realize that schools like Hawaii and Texas Tech had QBs who were not duel threats and could not run the ball. Every QB is suited for the Spread. The guys behind Nassib are duel threats who can be used with the Spread Option. My point is use the Spread passing and running plays minus the option if that is our future system. There is zero point not to. This is silly.

What he is doing NOW is square peg round hole. Bailey would be better off in a Spread. So why use him in a Pro Style? We have an OL who cannot move a 1AA DL off the ball. So why use a smash mouth style?
