We'll play in a bowl next season

We need a QB badly. If Jack Coan goes into the portal, drive a Brink’s truck up to his house like we are in the SEC. oh a WR who can get downfield, another OT and a DT too please. Then we are cooking. Cooking meaning 6-7 wins

based on the current roster and recruits, 8 wins

we will know more at the beginning of February

8 wins? When our offense was “humming” and we were turning the corner this has been an avg 4-5 win team. That’s with Shafers recruits, a QB, and experience. We’re going to win 8 games next year. I know you always have an “out” with that projection the way you keep wording it but still, 8 wins? It makes no sense.

Yeah I think some young guys gained some really good experience this year but I am going to hold off on any projections just yet. Let's see where the dust settles with the seniors and who returns. Let's see what our QB stable looks like. Let's make sure guys like Bleich come in healthy. Let's see if we have any staff changes and let's see what the transfer portal looks like for guys coming in. Lots of unknowns at the moment including whether or not there will be a normal Spring this April. I gotta say though I look forward to the off season and seeing what unfolds.

its not an out, it’s a fundamentail premise, if that changes so might the conclusion

pretty simple stuff

I think we’re going to have a much improved line and TD is going to ball.

If Taj can tone it down, even a little bit, he’s an all ACC receiver. Hopefully Queeley continues to develop and we can have someone competent in the slot.

Tucker is going to be insane. The future is bright
I would love to see Alford be a breakout WR next year.

It’s only a fundamental premise if that’s how it’s used. If so, great. I don’t know how the recruiting class gets us to 8 wins though. It’s an exciting class but to expect they will come in and help move us from 1 win to 8 I think might be a stretch. I know, this year doesn’t count but we still have 1 win. It’s also very rare to have true freshman come in and make an impact at SU. So to expect multiple freshman have that big an impact I think might be very optimistic.

I liked the game overall today. Defense will be even better next year. I thought Gilbert called a good game, he seems to be installing more plays and seemed to keep ND off balance. And we had two 100 yard rushers

Need to get a QB in portal otherwise it’ll be J Morgan, Tex and the new guy next year
Keep a good eye on the portal in the couple of weeks there will be many new names added and I'm sure us board junkies will be all over it.

I mean, ok, but that's pretty boring coming from a poster with 69 in their handle. :high five:

How many games has Tommy started with a decent OL? Two years in a row we started with players in sub-optimal positions. He gets hurt. Last 3-4 games were gaining steam with the OL playing better and those players back in their proper spots or with a late change that helps.

That first sentence is our annual hope.

Right now on offense, you’re looking at a need for an OT, another TE, and probably one outside receiver.
  • A few posters have mentioned hearing good things about Red and Froumy. I think a transfer is likely.
  • TE - does Hackett come back? If so, good shape here.
  • WR - are AQ and Harris enough? Could a newcomer push for time?
On defense, assuming Iffy stays, things are looking good with the DBs. Lots of talent for the LBs. DL is a huge question mark, obviously.
  • Does an oft injured player - Rondi, Dawson or a couple of transfers make an impact?
  • If Richards comes back, does he bulk up for the DL?
  • Steve Linton has the frame for the DL, does he get moved?
A fair amount of ?s, but I think there’s a lot of reason for optimism.

Last year he went 20-36 with 4 TDs against Duke (win) and Louisville (loss) behind a competent OL. Any QB will be better behind a competent OL. My opinion is the jury is still out on just how good he can be.

TD had other issues besides the OL play. We have gone over repeatedly on the board so no need to repeat. I hope he can fix them but not convinced. If putting hopes on next season with TD return may be disappointed. OL will be improved hopefully but it’s not like it’s going to be ND line giving 7 seconds to throw on plays. Still feel we will always need a DT qb.

IMO Devito is a great thrower, decent to good passer, but a mediocre overall QB. If he develops then IMO next year he can he a great thrower, good to great passer, and decent to good QB. Not sure that is enough for us to get a Bowl. I do think the year after he could develop into a great thrower, great passer, and good to great QB. I think he is two years away from stardom whether here or elsewhere. That is IF he develops. I think he has too big a jump to make it next year though.

You're crazy. We have one of the best back 8s on defense in at least in the ACC with some potential to be a really, really good defense overall. The Oline will be better and deeper, we lose no receivers, the RBs are really good and going to get better, and if you don't think we will be better at QB, I don't know what to tell you. DB is a great motivator and the OC had a helluva plan for the #2 team in the country. The fact that we were 3-4 questionable (or bad) calls away from taking them to the wire is exciting. Our DC is a Godsend. Between the incoming class and what we already have (returning health matters), next year will shut up a lot of the haters.

What does anything you wrote have to do with what I wrote?

Our back 8 is good, especially if Iffy comes back. Will he?

The DL needs to play better for us to have a really good D. So either the 3 SRs, who could all leave (will they?), have to step up or we need a transfer/s.

RBs are really good and hopefully they stay healthy all year.

QB play will be better but will it improve enough to make a Bowl? That is a question that no one can answer at this time. I think it was telling that the first few games Rex had packages when he does nothing physically better than TD. Will Dino go all in on a dual threat? No one on this board can answer that.

The OL will be deeper and is expected to be better but until they prove it on the field for an entire season it is just speculation. Will Servais be back? If not then we lose experience and continuity.

WR/TE we may lose 2 guys. Nykeim is a threat even if he isn't used a whole lot. Losing him will hurt. We still do not have a downfield threat or a big body that can go grab a ball. Losing Hackett would hurt depth.

There are a ton of questions going into next season. Some of those will be answered by the end of Summer camp. Some of those will not be answered until we enter the conference slate. There is certainly a reason for hope but getting everything situated in time to get 6+ wins is asking a lot. We need to show improvement. Having a 4-8 season with a functional O (ie a season like 2017 or 2018) would be a big improvement over the last 2 years. Can we exceed that? Sure, but EXPECTING more than that is just setting ourselves up for failure.
