We're #2, In Fewest Bench Minutes Played

holy christ... huge upset to not be #1. But i guess if coleman came off the bench, we would be #1.
He does come off the bench for the purposes of this metric, as I believe the "starters" are the five players who log the most minutes.

ah ok. even more of an upset if we really are #2

So I'm just a little confused. Recruiting and developing players is not an issue I'm told, but if that's the case how can our bench be so bad that it's filled with guys that are so bad they can't sub for guys shooting 2-19 or playing so bad that they shouldn't even be getting "a minute"?

We have to the worst post game that we have seen in some time, that’s why. We need to step our recruiting effort up 10 fold. We have no Big’s on this team who can play, are you comfortable with that? I would take Billy Celuck right now that how bad our big men are. The real question is how do fix this mess?

A couple of seasons ago I started a topic about recruiting, especially at the 5, which I was mocked, laughed at, called dumb among other things. I don't know how so many people didn't see this coming. The warning signs have been there for almost 3 years now.

The latest recruiting class was great, next years looks great and so far there's no doubt in that, but there were issues that were just not addressed and we put all of our eggs in one basket with some guys (Bryant). It's been tough.

I liked reading some of the Rak love in 2014 before the big Senior year!

Yeah Come on!!! We need to get Chino and Kaleb and Christian White some minutes!!! Come on JB!!!

I realize you're being facetious, but I can see where one could ponder how a program of Syracuse's stature so routinely has a bench that after the top 7 guys, the quality drops off at an exponentially alarming rate. And, imo, it's not a result of the recent sanctions, as over the years, for the most part, our bench has been relatively abysmal.

and over the years JB's record has been pretty abysmal too!

Nobody's questioning his record, success and HOF status...it clearly speaks for itself. That being said, even highly successful people have shortcomings or weaknesses that they can improve upon, it doesn't take away from their accomplishments. It's interesting in ways people will respond in the midst of a fair/honest question, especially when one has no skin in the game.

Right, and different successful people within the same profession can achieve their success using vastly different methods - why criticize one method vs another?

It's just interesting because Duke is 346th in bench minutes this year. 310th last year. As good a program we are, they are clearly on another level and I legit wonder why they have no depth.

Below, I had posted this earlier in the the thread. I wasn't criticizing as much as just stating that over the years our bench has been quite weak and not highly productive. I don't see the harm in acknowledging this reality, it's I believe directly related to JB's chosen method. At times though, I do feel it has bit us some, whether from guys getting injured, in foul trouble, etc. And, I do find it somewhat of an enigma (considering SU's stature in the hoops world) of the large drop off of apparent talent/quality once we get past our top 7 guys.

When you look over the past 40 years of JB at the helm, his 7 man rotation is his way, it's clearly his comfort zone. Only on a few occasions over this entire duration has he gone to 8, where one can objectively say that all 8 get "real" minutes of significance. He has stated in the past over and over that the college game with all its breaks, TV timeouts, etc., that players at this level have the stamina, etc. to more than function adequately. He also prefers and has stated that he wants his best players out there on the floor as much as possible as it gives him/SU the best chance of winning, now. That's what ultimately matters to him, winning, and now. It may be somewhat myopic in that it doesn't afford other players a legitimate chance to develop, gaining that critical game experience that may enhance the team's winning percentages late in the season, and, ultimately, come tourney time, but that's his way and prerogative. It is what it is...he has been very successful with this approach and it isn't ever going to change.

I imagine his preferred method of playing 7 guys, again, 'as long as these 7 are quality players,' may contribute to SU seemingly usually consistently having a relatively weak bench. This approach/system may also contribute and be casually related to why once you go past the 7th/8th man in the rotation, the roster level (quality) seems to drop off exponentially.

They are...as they consistently get several Micky D type kids annually. If I recall correctly, I think Duke had 8 or 9 Mickey D's on their roster last year. In the past, I think Duke typically has had more depth than the last couple of years. I think it's a relatively new trend for them, where with us it has been for decades.

Nevermind -- I'm assuming they're taking the 1-5 players with the most minutes out of it, which Lydon would be in the group. SO our "bench" would be Frank and DC
So, it was an invalid calculation done by someone who did not do the proper homework.
