What actually happens when a player gets “the talk”

In reading several threads, I am curious if anyone could offer more details on what happens when a player gets “the talk” from the coach.

I’ve assumed that it’s basically a player gets told he’s not in the coaching staff’s plans moving forward, not a good fit, etc. and the natural reaction to being told that is for the player to transfer out.

Wondering though does the player have to transfer out? Can the coaches force that? I know scholarships have always been 1 year at a time, but at least pre-portal era, a kid was recruited and offered a full ride for 4 years (focusing on football/basketball). Pulling a kid’s scholarship within those 4 years for underperformance was unheard of. Is that still the case or do coaches only promise a year now when they recruit a kid?

Could the player push back and tell the coach something like, “Look, I get I’m not in your plans, you don’t think I can play at this level, are going recruit over me, etc…but I still want to come back”?

Apologies if this has been discussed before. I didn’t see anything searching.

Generally when they are given the talk they are told that they will no longer be with the football team any longer.

Because we are a P4 school we have to honor the scholarship. So they would still get a scholarship but they wouldn’t not be participating with the team at practices etc.

They also will not be allowed to live in athletic housing and won’t have any access to the lounges etc for athletes on campus.

Generally when they are left with that decision or to transfer somewhere they can play, they take the option to transfer.

This is essentially the "talk" that my buddy's son got at Army about three years ago. It shocked me because I didn't realize that Army even cuts players given that they don't have to abide by the same 85 (now 105) player limit.

Wow, thanks for the insight. First reaction was “That’s messed up. Kid goes from being wined and dined as a recruit to being told they are not welcome anymore and essentially exiled from the team.”

But I guess it makes sense the more I think about it. Major college sports really are like many other jobs now where an employee (player) gets in trouble (underperforms), but keeps getting paid (scholarship) and is placed on administrative leave and no longer allowed to perform their job duties (play on the team). Or they can choose to resign and seek other employment (portal/transfer)

Also, drastically reduces any chance we have any players who struggle freshman/sophomore year, but finally break out their junior or senior year.

I might be wrong, but I think the scholarship is only for one year.

I’m 99.9% it is a four year scholarship that the school must honor unless the student athlete enrolls elsewhere. I don’t know if that applies to all sports (many non-revenue sports have partial scholarships and up until recently, more turnover/students leaving the team.

This used to be the case, however, all Power conferences are mandated to honor the scholarships for 4 years.
This makes sense as I assume if a kid did decide to give up the sport and stay on scholarship at a school, it should still count against the limit for the remaining number of his first 4 years. There has to be some tradeoff to telling a kid he’s no longer a member of the team.

Thank you. I did not know that.

Now I will say the caveat to this is that it can’t be for “athletic” reasons why they would pull their scholarship.

However, if they are medically DQ’d or academically disqualified they do not have to honor the scholarship.

Do you mean that they become a peon, like the rest of the non-jock students? ;)

Fran shared with us an example of the talk when Pena left.

I forget all the details but it was basically "I'll vouch for you and support you wherever you end up, but you gotta go."

We don't have anybody that barely got a scholarship and is going to want to clutch it til their hands bleed. They're all at least three stars. They can all get a scholarship somewhere else that wants them and will probably let them play. People like to be wanted.

They can pull the scholarship if they’re medically disqualified?!

That is seriously efffffed up.

I’m not sure that’s true about they can all get a scholarship somewhere else.Lots of articles out there that say otherwise.

I think medical DQs still get scholarships honored but they no longer count towards the football team cap? Or am I making this up? Think we had some concussion casualties, etc. that were able to stay and complete their degrees. Not sure what the burden of proof is to justify medical DQs though, think Tenny used to "DQ" a lot of kids when they were taking 40 kids each recruiting class.
