I’m actually serious about this question? What are the expectations of Syracuse Football?
Since 2000 Syracuse football has had a winning record just 8 times! That includes your 7-6 records. Everyone can be pissed off and upset at this year and blame anything and everything at the coaching staff but can we just all agree this is top 5 hardest P4 job in the country. Atleast Coach Fran has us atleast relevant. Now with the terrible year, can they still bring in our top committed kids? That remains the question. If they can, I think we are in for a good year next year. If not, I think we will see a better but not great year.
Our 4hr recruiting base is by far the worst in the country at the P4 level. We have all of NY, Massachusetts, CT, VT, Maine, NJ and Pennsylvania.
Private School / Small School: this severely restricts us on a multitude of issues. With just under 23k in total enrollment, we lack massive crowdfunding needed to compete in NIL against the major state schools with double the enrollment. We don’t have a massive donor list or one unicorn to fund the program.
Every coach over the last 25yrs has failed at Syracuse. Marrone is obviously the outlier in that he had two of the 8, but I think he came to realize how hard a job it had become and would be.
People blaming ERob this year needs to drastically reevaluate. The defense, especially over the last 5 games has not been the issue. Football is ultimate complimentary team game. If the offense isn’t giving you anything, the dam is gonna break. If the defense doesn’t give you anything, the offense won’t keep up. The defense out scored the offense last night!
Our inept offense has been excruciating to watch. The lack of roll outs or play action, not under center play has been mind boggling at times. Us playing walk on true freshman at QB has to be talked about. It cannot be possible for this to be our best option and if it is, I truly can’t imagine how bad our options truly are.
I don’t know what my expectation is each year but I guess I need to reevaluate my own expectations since I’m more pissed off than I think I should be.
All in all, love the passion of the fan base, and I don’t have answers, but I think my expectations for the program are: every 4 years be a 10 win program, every year be competitive in games, but every year to win 5 games with a chance at a bowl.
I’m hopeful that Fran and his use of NIL can change the program long term with expectations but man is this a steep climb.
