Cole Murphy is now number 2 on the depth chart. If Norton isn't better than last year do we see Murphy?
High School: All-CIF First Team Defense … All-Football League First Team Offense … All-Area Second Team … All-league selection … In 2013, recorded 57 touchbacks and hit 6-of-9 field goals … Averaged 42.6 yards per punt … Career statistics: Hit 10-of-15 field goals, including a 50 yarder

I'd love to see him push Norton. Not saying that I don't think Norton will win the job, but if there's true competition, it might push him to work harder and focus more on getting/keeping the PK job. Also, if he's decent, we'll have a Plan B if things don't work out.

Very very limited chance we see him unless Norton gets hurt or goes on a bender.

Is it because Norton is that much better or they don't want to burn his redshirt (or both)?

Norton's better. Once Hofrichter gets here next year he'll be starting anyways, this frosh is a walkon.

I would prefer that no field goals or extra points are attempted. Always go for it!

A kicker is only needed for kickoffs. I don't need a punter either.

There is a coach somewhere who always goes for it regardless of the down and distance (and yard line) and has a fabulous record. Can't remember his name of school. Might be HS somewhere.

Shafer and every other coach is still in the dark ages when it comes to kicking. The first FBS head coach that embraces the no-kicking strategy will have a huge competitive advantage until everybody else gets on board.
