I think general consensus is Red is getting another year. Given that assumption, what needs to happen in the next 60 days to position this team for an NCAA bid next year?

I think Red is gone next year if he doesn’t make the NCAAT, so that means the next 60 days are the most critical to create a competitive roster capable of making the tournament. As it stands right now we basically have a roster barely capable of fielding a team.

Have at it.

Massive overhaul.
Wunderkind needs to earn his nickname.
Focus on guard play.
We'll find out if Melo is pulling out his money gun.
Maybe something with assistants.
Red needs to study I guess.

I'm of the camp that while high-level player acquisition matters greatly, Red needs to implement a system, or they'll just be another team with decent talent on the outside looking in of the tournament.

Get the players you can, but after that, it's on you. Not NIL, not fan support, the coach coaches the team. Excuse time is over.

The fact it even has to be mentioned heading into Year 3 highlight my general doubts in Red.

Honestly, I don't expect much.

I do not think Red can coach adequately so whatever rearranging of the chairs is done for next year, the root problem will remain... but we will try and hope for the best.

What has to happen is inevitable I think and there will be more pain to wade through for the fans before the decision makers determine they have had enough pain and do what is needed.

Would be very glad to be wrong about that and eat crow, tho.

I want to see a housecleaning and new HC

Outside of that, I’m not sure whatever is done is going to matter all that much.

Red has proven, to this point, he can’t coach a roster up, has no semblance of a system and doesn’t know what he’s looking for out of the portal. Defensive identity is not even a consideration and offensively, it’s the same as the latter JB years. I have a feeling this year is going to look similar to last year’s March-April, only with the hope Kline’s role adds something new.

I don’t even know what can be done to make next year successful unless we somehow are able to pay for a high end PG, shooters and a big. Even then, wil it matter if they can’t get coached up and don’t have a system/identity.

Some better assistants would be nice but what AC with any potential big time impact is coming to a situation with a lame duck HC? Replacing Griffin with whoever isn’t going to change the trajectory of the situation.

Hire another assistant.
Build a team with a legit point guard, a rim protecting center, and along with a couple of 3 and D wings/2 guard to play off the point guard.
Find a way to keep Donnie.
Move on from JJ and Bell.
Give the freshmen a year to grow.

Do I think all of this is likely? No. Finding a legit PG and rim protecting center are the most urgent needs. Shooting would be next.

I have no idea how people think Coaching is an issue here

Talent/recruiting/Roster building go ahead

Coaching what are we basing that on?

In the next 60 days? I'd like to see if the Tracker dude can figure out how his dad really died and what his mom has been hiding.
bring his wife back for a few more episodes.

-Hire the maximum number of assistants, and let at least one current assistant go.
-New strength and conditioning coach
-Retain JJ (and/or Moore), Freeman, and Petar
-Retain Kiyan and Sadiq
-Get at least one top ten portal player and spend a ton in the portal
-Address the horrendous defense of the last several years
-Stop talking about the "Orange Standard" and get to work

I guess a tangent question would be is the greater good not making the tournament so Red is not back for year 4?

Personally I want to see a new S&C emphasis, and an experienced assistant who knows how to run a program because whoever is running ours now is failing. Players sadly come and go - I'll judge that later when we know what the roster is.

I want the staff to be proactive in the following order.

1: finalize NIL budget. You can't run a business without a solid budget.
2: Determine which of the current players you want to retain.
Give them an NIL offer that they need to sign by a fixed date.
If they don't sign by the date reduce the offer by 50% . Tell them that if they stay this will be their compensation.
3: At this point Kline and Red should have two things.
A: solid understanding of returning players.
B: Solid understanding of positions of need and available funds.
4: prioritize positions of need. Create 3 players in order for each position of need and start making offers.
5; Review each assistant coach. Designate each coach specific player. Outline specific goals of improvement for each player including strength and conditioning and off court/academic personal goals.
Ask for weekly progress reports on each player in writing.
Weekly hold in person meetings with the player and their assigned coach to discuss progress.

I could go on but you get my two cents.
Red needs to get very specific. Get micro. Forget the crap about
" The SU way".
Micro manage each player to improve them.
Once they buy into self improvement then move onto team goals and improvement.
Again do this in a micro way.
Don't say " Better Defense "
Drill on how to as an example handle screens. When to fight through. When to go under. Ect
Red needs his version of DART.
At a minimum he needs to become much more detailed.

A few thoughts...
  • Absolutely zero complaining, excuse-making or rationalization about money. You have the money (supposedly). Get it done or shut up.
  • Retain Freeman, Moore, Starling and Majstorovic (that's priority order).
  • Completely, 1000%, unquestionably nail the portal.
    • First order of business being to land a premiere, ball distributing PG.
    • Acquire a rebound hoovering, rim protecting Center (who isn't the foul-out-in-15-minutes type).
    • Acquire at least two dead-eye three point shooters at the swingman (SG/SF) spot.
    • Bench acquisitions must be strong defenders.
    • All portal additions must come from Power 5 programs. No mid/low majors whatsoever.
  • Schedule 2 closed scrimmages in October vs. strong P5 programs. No open exhibition games or D2 scrimmages.
  • Complete revamp of the S&C program.
  • Complete revamp of the practice agenda/schedule. Whatever we did this year didn't work at all. Blow it up and start from scratch.
  • Fill out the assistant coaching staff and hire a specialized offensive and defensive consultant (one each).
    • Develop customized training and practice plans for each player to follow from the offseason onward. Each player has an assigned assistant/consultant to monitor progress.
Probably more but this is off the top of my head.

They need to tear the player acquisition and training process of this program down to the studs and start over. What we've been doing clearly stinks.

I'd like to see an end to the non-stop rationalization / excuse making from a segment of the fanbase.

And I'd like an objective assessment of how this year unfolded, and what the alarming KenPom / NET data actually suggests about the state of the state.

And unlike last year, I'd like to see results from the portal.

And I'd rather have that $1M that appears to have been earmarked for a center to go instead to a top flight PG.

What I actually expect us for the portal results to be underwhelming, because players with options don't want to play for losing programs. And for the excuse mongering about NIL to continue, when we don't land out top prospects. I also expect there to be a mass exodus of players once the season ends, after the inevitable first round loss in the ACCT. So we'll have lots of holes to fill.

This is a very honest assessment.

If Melo and Woodson are really tight, I would not be surprised if he were hired to be our bench coach. I don't think it is a good idea, but prepare for the possibility.

I wish we could get Hop as an assistant as well. Get us back into recruiting Philly to Boston. But that is not likely. We definitely need to get a recruiter for those areas. They have been good to us, can't have your whole staff from the DMV.

I think we need to take a hard look at Englestad and Griffin.

I think back to when Red, and other first time
coaches get hired, like Gerry, for example. They step up to the podium and talk about how they want to do this and do that.

Then, eventually, they have to check their ego at the door. They realize they need a strong coaching staff to recruit, to teach, to babysit. They need a strong support staff, and now a GM, an analytics person, and someone who can help open the doors to the big donors, whether local businessmen or alumni.

Coaching is not just about X's and O's. They effectively need to be CEO's and develop lists like yours and put plans in place with trusted advisors to ensure their priorities are able to be accomplished.

There can't be a three year or five year plan. It basically is a 60 to 120 day plan. And they need to check off every box on their list.

See ? It's more what I'm looking forward to not having to see. This team play another game.

If you try and move on from JJ, then you end up having to overpay to replace him with a guy in the portal on top of trying to find a quality pg and center. And that replacement, as we have seen every year with the portal, will be a gamble on some level that could easily be worse than JJ. The portal is always likely to disappoint, and more likely to do so when you are trying to replace a ton of guys. Unless JJs money demands are totally ridiculous, we have to try and keep him in the fold. Does anyone really think we will have the money to replace JJ with someone better, along with landing a quality pg and center?

Coaching what are we basing that on?
Basing it on the fact we are 60 games in, we still don’t know what our plan is, we have seen no ability to coach defense, we keep playing Carlos 30 mpg, and we have shown zero ability when to call timeouts or manage a rotation.

And the coach owns NIL/Roster building. See Fran.
