A lot of things...

1) Our D is just fun to watch. Tremendous DL play coupled with long, athletic, physical ball hawking Secondary.

2) Absolute top-flight Special Teams.

3) We have 3 VERY good RB’s that we know of.

4) The OL was encouraging, we have a solid core.

We already have the answers to a large part of the equation.

I like hearing from people with a coach's eye. What did you think of the LB play?

How much of the “offensive woes” do you think was attributable to keeping things vanilla? And it seemed as though we were intent on establishing the run game against an opponent that we knew we could beat.

To add to your list:

5) TD knows when to run and how to slide.

6) The DBs held in check a competent QB/Receiving corp and continued their thieving ways.

7) The D line was brutal. I know Liberty is in their first year as a FBS level team, but they do have some good O-linemen. 8 sacks, 14 TFL and negative rushing total.

I think the “vanilla” thing is overrated. We ran a normal mix for a first game. It may have looked vanilla because we looked to the RBs in a short passing game. If our QB completed more of his passes, the play mix would have looked a lot better.

The game flow was kind of expected but I was anxious for a while. Dino said the offense had some work to do and they do. He said the defense and special teams would be good and they were. He said that he didn't want Tommy to have to be the only leader and he wasn't. It was a team win. We beat the point spread, shut out a program that has worked really hard to join the big boys, had some long drives, showed nicely in the run game, and didn't have to rely on a single player to wrench victory from the jaws of defeat.

We had a good first outing. Even the interceptions functioned as good punts. The passing game will improve, the offense will come into balance, the pace will improve, the defense and special teams will thrive, and we'll have opportunities to win a lot of games. But we don't operate in a vacuum. Maryland may be better than expected, Wake and BC will be good games to have at the dome, and the Clemson game will be a defensive battle.

Should be fun...

yeah, that first interception was essentially a punt as it was on 4th down. Of course, I wish he connected but I'm sure the deep fade was the one and only read on that play - either score or it's essentially a punt (well, unless the defender was smarter and just batted the ball down. lol).

Babers told us last week that the D was well ahead of the O. Good to know our coach doesn't sugarcoat or lie to the fanbase.

Yeah...it's nice having a coach that merits attention. He's the truthful sort. I also really like having a team that is balanced offensively & defensively and an offense that is balanced between passing & running. Tommy didn't have his best day yet we won decisively. We're a good team...

I think Hackett is going to develop into an outstanding TE. I thought he had a very solid game.
With Evans size and experience; he should be a vital OL cog in our run game, all year.
Hackett has experience and is a good blocking TE as well as a decent target for the passing game.

Not sure how any SU fan watches that game and doesn't get excited. This defense is legit. I was really impressed with Lakeim Williams, was all over ththe field and really reallly physical, and that was while still being a half step late on alot of his fits. Army was also solid at the Will. LBs showed a much higher ceiling than what we had last year and when they get more fluid, this defense is going to be really tough. Jones is going to be really good. The year of development with the young DBs really showed too. Literally assassins row back there. Trill just looked unreal. Iffy handled AGG. Cisco was Cisco. And the depth provided by Cordy, Scoop, and Stritz (among others) was solid.

I was really worried about our LBers because Guthrie was a stud the last half of last year. Then I looked at Williams stats just about 30 minutes ago. Wow! No longer worried.

I thought they flew around pretty good, especially Lakeim... Armstrong isn’t going to hurt us and in limited reps Mikel impressed me. Chasing down their RB in the backfield from the backside is impressive.

I think we’re going to be fine, especially in the future.

I don’t know that I’d attribute our passing woes to a vanilla offense. In theory you should be able to execute regardless of play call.

That being said, we’ll certainly do more to allow TD to feel comfortable and have some easier reads against stiffer competition. So I don’t think our inefficiency is from vanilla play calling but I do think we’ll be better moving forward as the playbook and calls expand.

I thought we ran the ball well.

Yeah I think their footwork and stances could be a bit better. At the snap no real downhill steps but not backing up like beginning of last year either. Like I said before as Conley told me they should take 3 -6” steps towards line as they figure run fits and adjust on fly. Makes perfect sense to me.

Play of the DTs, especially Harper, really relieved some serious concerns...
Teams have to respect our DTs for our DEs to do their thing; I think if we stay somewhat healthy there, we are in good shape...

Harper definitely showed some things yesterday. Maryland will likely give us a better measure. If he is active and stout at the line against them then he will be a pleasant surprise for the d. Honestly I am not to sure I will be judging the def overall until Maryland. Liberty is supposed to be a win for our team and we should look good. Not taking away anything from the young men and there are positive signs but I am going to hold off on overly praising the d and over criticizing the offense on just one game. Next week will be telling. Go Cuse!

One interception acted as a punt. The other took points off the board. Would have had a FG attempt.

Devito was just off. Some Wrs were open and just not hit. A few drops on imperfect balls but should still catch most of them.
PS-With that said Maryland QB did not have first game jitters and hit his wide open receivers and hit his long balls against poor competition. Devitos jitters are a concern until they aren't anymore. Fix it and all concerns go away.
