What is Jimbo's problem?

I guess he's only partially suspended.

After this incident, in which there's no doubt that he clocked the woman at the bar, and the dog incident, it's time for FSU to give him his walking papers (to the SEC?).

There is actually considerable doubt about whether Dalvin Cook punched this woman outside the bar. There's a decent chance this is bogus and gets dismissed or thrown out.

I think you are thinking of Deandre Johnson, who definitely did punch a woman in a bar, and was released.

Agree it's not a great look. I expect he will be gone if this is going to trial, but at the moment the accusation looks pretty sketchy.

No offense - but with the way it appears the local police cover FSU, it seems everything ends up looking "sketchy" ...

You are correct, I did confuse the two incidents. My bad.

Well, you've got the narrative all right. FSU is in a no win here.

Jimbo has actually kicked many players off the team, but those don't count. This case had a lot of witnesses that told a very different story than the accuser. You've got a lot of witnesses that dispute the account, you've got a 911 call that contradicts the account, you've got injuries that contradict the account, and you've got an accuser who couldn't identify her assailant at all until she got together with her father and he "helped" her identify him. Cook's attorney filed a motion for speedy trial today because he believes the state case is so weak. He is refusing to plea bargain it down to resolve the charges.

No other attorney general would have charged this case, but Willie Meggs makes his career on overzealously pursuing charges against FSU football players. I know that's hard to believe given the national narrative, the AG could not be less of a "friend of the program", going back decades. But even his history, there's a good chance these charges are dropped.

Team picture optics aside, FSU's doing the right thing in this case given what we know...if this moves forward for trial, then I expect he'll be suspended indefinitely until we see how that plays out. If the charges are dropped because they are bogus, then he will be (and should be) a part of the team.

The joke about him being asked to turn to the side was a damn good one though!

Exactly. When the powers that be fail to act or create questions because they fail to act in step with the law - it creates more questions. And once their is a pattern (perceived or real) - everyone gets tarred with the same brush.

I don't know if he did it or not. But I do know the near instant perception of guilt is based on a pattern. A pattern that is hard to break.

Meggs is actually a District Attorney rather than an AG but other than that the analysis is true - if Cook is convicted of or pleads to an assault charge he will be dismissed from the program. If he is cleared, he will return to the team. Meggs may be an FSU grad as I am but in his position he has to seek impartiality and objectivity - everyone must be treated the same. Some FSU fans don't like him and I could see him "going overboard" against FSU to show that he is "impartial". I think he is in an elected position but there are a number of people in Tallahasse (lived there nearly 26 years) who are not FSU fans even if they are grads - some folks just don't care about athletics you know - and there are grads from Florida A & M (a local HBCU), U. of Florida, etc. throughout the city. As you would expect, grads from other in-state schools likely have no liking for FSU.

Are the other witnesses you are referring to are current football players?

Because I have not found a statement from Meggs office saying otherwise other than current players giving a statement in Cook's defense. Many other stories mirrors what is said here, but the hometown paper was chosen to show it.

There is at least one other witness that's not a football player. When everything is out on the table, maybe he is clearly guilty, but so far, it's not unquestionable. It took 17 days or something before charges were filed, so obviously it wasn't a slam dunk in any event, but Meggs always errs on the side of prosecuting.

We'll see. Cook has a hearing on his request for a speedy trial today, so one way or another this may be resolved before football season.

I'm not saying Dalvin Cook is an angel, or that FSU hasn't had any discipline problems, but this should have never been prosecuted.

This is the "split lip" that was caused by a major college running back punching her several times in the face. The investigator for the prosecution said that it didn't look like the result of a punch to the face. That, and dirt on her knee, were the injuries caused.

She was admittedly drunk (underage), and the only witness to support her claim was her friend, was SO drunk that she was unable to write out a legible report even well after the incident.

The accuser was unable to identify Dalvin Cook in a photo lineup, but then amazingly could several days later. Coincidently, her boyfriend is a safety at Auburn.

And she's hired a lawyer for a civil case, of course.

This case was pursued for publicity reasons only, but also because SA Meggs has ALWAYS pursued FSU players this way...its just what he does.
