What is Reasonable to Expect Moving to the 3-3-5 in Year One?

I have 1 thing to say.. and 1 thing only... OH WEEE OHHH... OHHH...OHHH... The STORM DOME TROOPER DEFENSE has arrived.. I live in Cali.. It is widely known on the west coast that our new D coordinator is an absolutely incredible D coordinator and the aggressiveness our D is about to partake in... is going to impose HAVOC on many ACC offenses...

Love you brother, but this take is way off base (even factoring in your hyper enthusiasm).
Nothing about the defense has been "dominant." When we "force the ball in the air" SU allowed 14.3 yards per completion, ranking 124th of 130 teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

INTs - #25 nationally is prolly last years best defensive stat. 2018 we were pretty good in a lot of areas

Figuring out current personnel and how it matches is tough....Can see Williams as the Spur/Viper/. Looking at rosters that play this D, linemen are small agile 260 to 280. All these 8 other positions are hybrid. If you know and do your job...it can create a lot of chaos....not easy to predict.

Yes. Secondary is our strength. Just gotta hope a guy like Cisco cares more about making the NFL as a hybrid than cheating for picks and can bounce back from last year.

My response was in reference specifically to the OP's use of the term "dominant" to describe any aspect of the D (he has referring to the 2019 season). 2018 3rd down efficiency and TOs were very good. But at no time did I see the D as dominant.

You missed the Liberty game and this forum afterwards? I think every post contained that word when talking about or D. Lololol.

I’ve been skeptical of the 3-3-5 ever since RichRod went to Michigan. I hope to be pleasantly surprised.
I don’t think the 3-3-5 is some magical solution that fixes broken defenses and wins championships.
Some of the articles on the 3-3-5 have done a good job describing how it has evolved over time, especially out West. Rocky Long and his staff are doing things Rich Rod and that Huxtable guy at NC State, who also tried to run a 3-3-5, ever dreamed of.

Props to Dino for understanding this, and going with the best possible option to implement the best version of it out there. NC State tried to do it on the cheap last year and got what they deserved. Doeren is stupid.

The talents there. Iffy, Trill and Cisco would be impact starters on any team in the ACC save maybe Clemson.

a lot of the yards given up in the air graduate with Cordy and Foster. I love CF too but 2019 could have been seen as a slight regression.

not really. Cisco was the weakest cover guy in that group.

gotta agree here, Cisco was boom or bust. If he didn’t pick the ball off, he certainly wasn’t going to be tackling. I swear I saw a few times he backed off guys and avoided that tackle (however this could have been a skewed angered view during this rough season)

At least he has significant upside and didn’t add to it with stupid penalties

some revisionist history and board mythology here - he can and does tackle very well

He had a few games at the end of the season where he didn’t, someone pointed it out and now it’s true

I said he can’t cover. He’s ok as a tackler.

He can tackle, but I've seen times where he wants nothing to do with it, particularly when we're down in the 4th quarter

I don’t hold this kind of thing against a kid, at all

edit: and this is how weird board things work. He doesn’t tackle in a blowout and then it becomes something else over time

I don’t know, I LOVED Cisco last season. Thought he was absolutely great. Saw him not put max effort in a lot of the season and I developed a very much Love/Hate feeling towards him.

I absolutely love Cisco and think he’s a freak athletically...but I hate when I see him put the minimum effort out there on the field...

So help me out, I'm being lazy. I assume LB is pretty standard in a 3-3-5, and the secondary is full nickel with the same type of 5th DB we've used in recent years.

But what is looked for in the DL. Bigger? Or maybe on bigger DE, one NT type, and one more traditional pass rushing type DE?

Is it blitz heavy?

It’s a slippery slope when you call out effort plays, IMO. It becomes “every play” and that he doesn’t “play hard” - when it’s when we’re getting blown out once or twice

Narratives grow and take on a life of their own. Sometimes fair, sometimes not

that’sfair.

I def wouldn't say he didn’t play hard “every play” because that’s simply not the case with Cisco.

Cisco reminds me a lot of Janoris Jenkins. A really special talent that when they come to play can be one of the best out there. However, if they become uninterested or whatever because the team is losing, just aren’t in to the game whatever, just look plain bad.

like I said, don’t get me wrong because I do love Cisco and I think he is a really special talent. There’s just times, in my humble opinion, that he isn’t always into the game. Doesn’t mean that it’s true, just my personal observances

That, and put the kibosh on posting personal highlights after your team just lost.

yeah this is a big one, I’m really hoping to see A LOT less of this.

Makes them seem like they only care about themselves and not the team...whether that’s true or not...perception is reality

I think that’s fair too. I’d just say it that way so it’s accurate.
