Does the NCAA's new found power mean bad news for UM? Do they drop the hammer again in an effort to corral another "out of control" program?

Or do we see a UNC/Ohio State-esque type of sanction? Lose a few schollies and postseason ban for a handful of years...

I just don't see the NCAA bombing out another school in the near future.

If it's treated as an isolated incident, they probably get something like U$C. If it is viewed as part of an ongoing problem, could be worse.

Didn't knews come out that Miami continued their activities even after the NCAA found out about them? If so, I can see something lesser in scale than PSU but greater than USC.

I think Miami is fubarred.....This will be Miami's second major scandal in 10-12 years. They are fkd.

I already forgot what happened in hurricane country... Remind me

They have two major violations in a year ... they just got dinged for shenanigans during the Shapiro investigation

Boosters paid for countless things, there was some kind of performance bonuses, athletes got access to clubs, mansions, yachts, etc. Also, it just came out last week that (if I'm not mistaken) Al Golden knew about the booster interaction with players, and through some assistant, used boosters to aid in recruiting.

Miami won't have the $60 mill fine probably. But they could see around a 4 year bowl ban and a major loss of scholarships.

If I guess I would say a 3 year bowl ban and 20-25 scholarships lost.

They could maybe face the death penalty. Death Penalty is for when major violations occur while already on probation.

Not gonna happen. If PSU didn't get it I would be shocked to see Miami get it.

I just can't see the NCAA bringing the big hammer down onto another program. 3 year bowl ban...15 schollies/yr...no bowl money

Is Miami on probation right now?

No I don't believe so but the NCAA won't be too happy if Al Golden was also breaking the rules in the middle of the Shapiro investigation.

I'm sorry, but the most frustrating part of all of these discussions centered on sanctions is that the one conference in this country that continuously violates the rules (albeit to a much lesser extent than PSU) is the one that never sees significant sanctions.

There is a reason that the conference with the most BCS championships has the most NCAA violations since 1980. The saddest part is that the NCAA seems to have blinders on if you play in the SEC

Ok thats right...amazingly the Ped St stuff almost made me forget about that instantly. I bet Miami is thankful for that for a short time anyways.

More importantly, what does it mean for our basketball team?
I almost brought that up yesterday but I didn't want to go there. I wouldn't be shocked to see public pressure at some point down the road for SU to hire an FBI guy like Freeh to do an independent investigation and for SU to live (or die) by the findings.

I mean if they got nothing to hide its the easiest way to move past the whole thing. Also though, the Sandusky case is totally different than the Fine case, so SU probably can get away without having to do that. But that doesn't mean there won't be outside pressure on SU to do something of that nature at some point. Maybe even by the NCAA itself.

Yes, the cases are quite different. Sandusky was a clear case of prolonged abuse with a coverup. Sandusky was charged and convicted. The Fine case is much murkier. Accusers have already recanted. Credibility is an issue with the remaining accusers. And Fine has not yet been charged (and likely never will). But the NCAA has taken on new punitive powers. Scary to think what they'll do with them. I hope that a Freeh type report is done and if there was abuse and a coverup, appropriate action is taken. We are..not Penn State. I want accountability.

If the allegations against Miami are true its time to lower the hammer on that program. If true, the allegations show they just don't get it (NCAA rules) or don't care.

This is so silly. The NCAA has no reason to act in our case what so ever. Totally different scenario. The PSU fans and other people who want to associate the two are clueless. BTW we did have a report done already.

The easy answer is that the SEC knows how to cheat better than other conferences. A more reasoned response, though, are the limits on the NCAA's power. IIRC, both the OSU and Miami violations came to light as a result of an unrelated criminal or federal investigation. The USC violations were only "uncovered" by the NCAA when Bush was sued by the agents who had loaned him and his family money. PSU's problems came about as a result of a criminal investigation into Sandusky.

I do not recall how UNC's issues were identified, but with the rest, the NCAA simply sat by and collected information from third-party investigations to use against the schools. Until and unless the SEC schools become the subject of a federal investigation, they are going to continue to skate by.
