Never seen so much rubber thrown into the air. Was very oblivious on Hunt's move when he got hurt and many other plays.

All turf fields have them. Not sure if they absorb wear and tear and help preserve the plastic, but I do know the Dome staff rakes the rubber in to keep the turf fluffed. And this is brand new turf. So lots of rubber

Info I found via a Google search said it helps prevent injuries by providing more cushion for the players.
There is also some controversy how healthy the pellets are as they are typically made from recycled tires.
There's a concern they may be toxic, especially for youth players.

85sualum is correct
Ive done several projects installing artificial turf and the pellets act as a ballast and extra cushion for football, really no more no less. They Dont effect ground stability in all recent testing that ive seen.
Harmful beyond that? I couldnt tell you.

Saw a piece on 60 minutes a few months ago claiming cancer risks for children who grow up playing on these fields is much higher than in typical grass because of the ground up rubber

I saw the same thing, aren't the pelleted just grinded up old tires?

I heard ground up trojans. gross cut some deal with USC.

The turf before this one also had sand mixed in with the pellets, don't know about this field tho
