I am curious what even made you a fan in the first place if you were looking at our team in the early 2010s and going yep, this guy sucks actually. The reason he survived the sanctions is because we just had a run of elite years from the late 2000s to early/mid 2010s. Hindsight is 20/20, but that is why. I am tapping out. He was elite. A long time ago. But he wasn’t successful enough in my opinion. Needed a once in a lifetime player to get over the hump and win a chip. It is what it is.

If your qualifier to be elite is to win more than one title then again only 17 coaches and 11 in the modern era are elite.

Izzo isn't elite. Tony Bennett isn't elite. Certainly Eddie Sutton, John Chaney, Kelvin Sampson and Mark Few aren't elite as they have never won a title . If you asked anyone in the industry if JB was elite the answer would be yes. The Hall of Fame, without bias, has ended this argument.

No, that is how you are choosing to judge JB since it is by far the category that makes him look the worst. You are salty about how his time here ended and its role in the current situation. You are a fan in the first place because we were one of the elite teams in the country for a very long time.

From 1980-2012 JB had TEN big east regular season titles. The hardest conference in the sport and we were the best regular season team in that conference almost a third of the time! His big east regular season record is by far the best of any team during that time. So the argument people make that we just got our wins against cupcakes is BS.

And for the people who argue that we coasted on talent and didn't do it with coaching, Jerami Grant just became like only the third (edit-4th) guy from cuse EVER to hit 10,000 points in the league. Oshae Brissett is a top 20 cuse NBA player!! His teams were not packed with future NBA studs, and we still had an insane run in the toughest conference in the sport. You are blinded by the last 10-12 years. I understand why given how bad it had been, but still, acting like JB was not an elite coach is weak sauce.

JB was a great coach in his prime and should have retired when people had mostly nothing but great memories. He allowed hubris to manifest and while people will remember the good, they will also now remember that in his final years he cratered the program he built and acted like a child when it was time to hang things up. I appreciate JB for all the great memories I have with Cuse hoops dating back to the days my dad taking my brother and I to all his games and I am frustrated as an older fan that he did what he did in the end. Between the end years of JB and the period Red has been in charge, the SU hoops brand has taken a serious hit. That sucks. Really hoping the new coach can make some good things happen.

Jin Boeheim had 46 players get drafted into the NBA. When you think about how few of them had good to great nba careers, its actually remarkable. He took kids that probably wouldn't have gotten a sniff from the nba, and got the most out of them and got them paid. Red has done the opposite.

Battle, Thompson, and Moyer were in that class. But, I don't remember the timeline--when they got verbals from each of them. And maybe they misjudged Huerter's willingness to do a year in prep school.
That team had some offense, though, with Lydon, White, and Gillon.

Moyer committed early and prior to his senior year in high school, summer of '14, so he had long been the first in that class.

SU went after Battle hard, and has hard as any recruit in some time...priority 1, 2 and 3 kind of deal. They valued him far above Huerter, and that played a large role in trying to push him to prep for a year as Battle was believed to be a 'one and done' type then. At the time of SU's fierce pursuit of Battle, he was rated significantly higher than Huerter. We got Battle (after first verballing to Michigan) and prior to Huerter blowing up. By then, Huerter had significant other offers and wasn't going to prep a year for SU, sanctions or no sanctions.

During those probation years, there was a lot of discussion here on how badly SU (JB) mis-managed the roster. Moyer, ended up redshirted his frosh year, so a wasted schollie there that could've been Huerter's. Hindsight being 20/20, Moyer was a complete bust as it turned out, and after displaying such little game at SU, a complete enigma in how he was ever ranked a prep top 100 player. His journeyman college career epitomized his highly overranked prep status for sure.

We ended up with White as a graduate transfer after Richardson freed up a schollie with his unexpected departure. I believe, if I also recall correctly, that schollie was in addition to getting back one of those original 4 lost schollies to 3.

JB never lost the locker room. It was always HIS locker room. You either toed the line or you sat in the doghouse. Another part of his genius was that he understood that you couldn’t motivate every player the same way. He coached each player the way they needed to be coached.

No zone. Even with good athletes we would still get routinely carved up by Tony Bennett, Jamie Dixon, and Roy Williams. There were a few coaches we had no chance against and JB made zero adjustments. Predictable.

I think the biggest game that Jb ever coached against those 3 you mentioned, JB won every time. Against Bennett in the elite 8, against Roy for the national title game and against Dixon twice. Once in the Big East title game and once in the NCAA tournament.
