What will make or break this 2025-26 team?

Defending is at the top of the list. Red holding JJ accountable and JJ becoming a role player that takes 4-5 less shots a game.

Red holding everyone accountable for that matter too and taking advantage of having a bench full of guys who should be utilized to add what is missing if a starter is struggling or the matchup isn’t ideal.

Naturally the rotation will shrink some as the season progresses but smart sub patterns have to be part of his evolution as a coach. There was a bare cupboard to work with last year but even then games were lost or non competitive due to major issues with the decision making around who to put on the court and who to keep on the court.

Also, re: Kiyan, we obviously can't in any way expect him to be Melo. That would be completely unfair to him. But he also can't be a freshman year Fab Melo or Rak or Benny Williams or Paul Harris where they're just totally unprepared to play as a frosh. If we're going to make the tourney, he has to be reasonably ready out of the gate similar to Flynn/Donte Greene.

I hate the accountability to Autry comments but I can understand them after what the fanbase is used to.

Here’s where I am. I want the players and team accountable to themselves and each other not to Autry. This is a paid professional basketball league now and we have talented athletes on this years team. Even the freshman are not nearly as green as usual.

What stops losing streaks and getting blown out of games is dudes looking at each other in the huddle during Timeouts and on the bench saying enough of this garbage this stops now. It’s not getting yelled at by a coach.

He won’t start. Kingz will. Kiyan will at best be the 6th man.

Getting coached by the coach often helps. He gets paid, too. To...coach...

These are still kids. This isn’t paid professional basketball.

They are kids that are paid professionals. It’s a hard mixture and some are more mature than others. I would think just like at work before you hire someone you look at talent and character traits like teamwork, hard work, accountability. The more you pay the better employees to can attract (Duke), the SEC…

Once they started getting paid the whole kid argument went out the window. A number of these guys are older than nba players. When nba players play poorly is the excuse they are kids. No. Some of these players are getting paid more than rookie contracts.

Very few of these guys have ever even played together.
So the broad question is whether a group of players with talent can be turned into a team.
That seems to depend heavily on the coaching and the players' commitment.

We'll see in a few months.

JJ and Donnie and then George and Souare have so at least there is some. Plus I believe a few times Kiyan and Sadiq have played together a little in certain events. That of course doesn’t take away from the point but there is some familiarity at least.

The way the rest of the additions play does tend to lean towards fitting in well too.

Besides Rob Dauster referring us as the team in Canada the entire time (is he a UConn guy?) lol. Thought they gave pretty good analysis and did their homework. Definitely a feel good listen! It’s time to win games and be the top 10 all time program that we are!

Probably the best listen you will find anywhere talking about this team even if they were a little too focused on Kiyan at times. That said this is the kind of analysis I miss.

Nothing here is any different than what any of us have said about current and the past.
