We went to Arizona for a non conference game and ended the Wildcats very long home winning streak.

1995-96, the year we went to the championship game.
Then we went right from Tucson out to the "cruddy" Hawaii Holiday Tournament (not Maui) and lost in the Championship game to UMass. The worst part is that we scored only 47 points while doing so. I think that was Calipari and his 2 senior guards held defensively on most plays. Both teams ended up in the Final Four that coming March. We advanced further.

Rainbow Classic - the worst part was that we were either tied or up 1 at the half but it was clear that we had no hope of playing UMass even in the second. Our team was out of gas after beating Arizona, Rhode Island?, and a solid Illinois team (with Ryan Blackwell, though I don't remember if he played).

And then we flew back and, like clockwork, got upset by Miami. Seemed the team was always a lock to forget about the task at hand when they flew to Miami in the '90s.

Hard to believe that team was 3-5 in the Big East at one point, given how they started the regular season and how they finished the season.

The classic Boeheim January swoon. Also like clockwork; that's how we know when we've got a special team, when they don't lose 3 of 5 or 5 of 7 in the early conference season.

Sidenote... have we ever lost in the maui invitational?

intrigued myself so much, i looked it up...

somehow 10-0

Maui Invitational

Interesting...wonder where that extra win came from. From memory, I remember Chaminade, Michigan, and Indiana in 1998; Baylor, Minnesota, and someone else during the Ennis season; and I know we beat Indiana when Billy Owens was there. Maybe we played a 4th game back then?

Edit: does Maui do that BS thing where we play early-round "tournament" games at the Dome, even though the field that will play at Lahaina is already set? Maybe we played some fake tournament games three years ago to pad our record.

I think you figured it out. we beat st francis - brooklyn in the maui invitational in the carrier dome. Ironically the closest win of the tournament for us.

Now that's a trivia answer...good find.

Hate that practice, so goofy. It's possible that we could've gone 3-1 and been tournament champions. And wouldn't those St. Francis guys have had something to be pissed about, going 1-0 and never getting on a plane for Hawaii.

We beat California in the Ennis year. I remember we played the Golden Bears and the Bears back to back.

We played California 3 years in a row. Maybe more.

Thanks for refreshing my memory guys. I thought it was our Final Four season with John Wallace and boys. Watching that game back then I remember it being a loud, hostile environment in the arena.

I just looked up John's stats for that season - 36.3 minutes, 22.2 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. In my opinion they are certainly STUD numbers :)

Has anyone mentioned Marcus Camby yet? He seemed to have charmed media coverage that whole season.

I recall him kicking in of our guys. Don't remember much else though.

Is that Arizona game on YouTube? Would be great to see it again.

Agreed, as would the win over Arizona at the Dome from the previous season. If I remember right, before that game Dick Vitale was hyping up Reggie Geary and saying he would lock Moten up. Moten ended up having a big game and gave Vitale a hard time about doubting him.

I feel like Michael Lloyd threw down a reverse dunk in that one too.

It should also be pointed out that "the Cuse is in the house oh my god, oh my god" chant started when we went out to Arizona. I believe Wallace was yelling it before the game or something based on the Blahzay Blahzay song "Danger(The East is in the House)", back when the East-West rap music rivalry was in full swing.

I remember them doing that when they won the west regional with Al Maguire.

I remember being in 8th grade during that tourney, and just forcing myself so hard to stay up for it.

Weren't the games on at like 1 or 2 am?

Same age, similar memory. Though I think the first couple rounds were at a more reasonable time, the UMass game was definitely midnight at the earliest. My family was at a wedding and my parents and I watched the game after the reception (and long enough after the reception that I'm pretty sure I took a nap before the game started).
