I would offer Marrone a healthy 2-year extension today! Yes, I have my doubts like a lot of people, but in my opinion he has earned the security of an additional 2 years. If the upcoming season is a bust I believe he deserves at least one more year, but I would begin to look around and be willing to cut my losses if necessary. But today I am optimistic for good reason, and I want to give my young coach the added job security he's earned. He's averaging 5.5 wins a year right now in a total rebuilding effort. If he walked away today he would leave the program in much better shape than he found it, and I would argue that the program is better right now than it has been in over a decade. He has made some frustrating mistakes, and I do wonder sometimes. However, he has shown the willingness to adapt. Of all the offensive minds in college football I believe that very few could match or surpass his coaching and understanding at the NFL level. Obviously, he's struggled some at the college level. The gap between the the coaching time and the level of talent needed to run what he is trying to run in my opinion is too great. I'm optimistic that he will shift and we will see better results on offesne. I expect the defense this year to be improved even with some of the unexpected departures. The leadership and maturity will be improved. Some of those close losses in 2011 are likely to be close wins similar to what we saw in 2010 unless the offense is much improved and then we might see even better results. Even with the difficult schedule I can see this team winning 7 games again. The depth is improving in quality and numbers, and the recruiting is moving in the right direction. Marrone is growing on the job while rebuilding a BCS program that sank to the bottom of the barrel. I believe the added job security will facilitate his learning. Be optimistic.
