This is a not so thinly veiled excuse for me to drop this here: http://.com/10-years-later-the-uvm-loss/

We're at the 10 year anniversary of losing to Vermont, and while a lot of folks have that one marked down as the worst loss they've seen (Richmond is worse, and even the regular season loss at DePaul a few years a go is worse, in my estimation), I just can't mark it down as the worst I've seen.

For me, it really would probably be DePaul, despite the fact that nothing was truly at stake there. I can't mark the UVM loss down for the reasons outlined in the link.

Just thought it might be interesting to see what losses stick out with SU fans. We're fortunate in that we don't see many...so when they come, the bad ones tend to stand out. I imagine the Cleveland State one is up there for a lot of folks, based simply on HOW it happened.

Butler and Vermont. But I've only been a fan since 2000.

Just seeing copenrath's face (or however you spell that) brings up the bile. I can still see BJ Sorentine waltzing over the half court line and heaving in 3's from 24-28 feet as though they were foul shots -- really a disgusting memory that still haunts. The only other dream that scary has spiders in it.

I was only 5 years old for the 1987 season so I don't have any recollection of it (thank god)

For me it's either Arkansas or Butler. I don't recall any other losses leaving me as soul-crushed as those two.

When you say Depaul are you referring to the blowout GMac's senior year, I assume? That game was definitely disappointing, but I wouldn't put it (or Cleveland State) anywhere in the stratosphere of an NCAA tournament loss.

1) '87 IU, title game
2) '89 Illini, elite 8
3) '12 OSU, elite 8
4) '13 Mich, FF
Heck they are all big ten teams, i never realized that.

5) '96 UK, title game
6) '10 Butler, sweet 16

First and foremost, 52-50 to close out Manley. That stings the most, as did the loss to Iowa in the NCAAs that year. That year the team was poised to really make a run as the #1 seed in the East.

After that, its a tie between the crappy losses to UVM, Richmond, Texas A&M & even Alabama. All very frustrating losses in March.

depaul wasnt in the same stratosphere as the vermont game. I honestly dont even see how that can be up for debate, let alone worse.

WHAT!??!

Butler is def up there for me too

Vermont, I couldn't move off my couch for like 3 hrs, I was so upset. Didn't watch another tournament game till the final four.

Indiana and no other one is close. We had that won. We had our path planned out to storm the court. Right over the left shoulder of Doug Logan. No other loss hurt near as much. It was a long ass drive back to Syracuse.

Technically, we've never lost to G-town.
It was just that the buzzer sounded before we outscored them.
But every time it's happened since that game in Manley I've felt disgusted for the next day or so.

Aside from G-town games, the worst loss should be Indiana in the '87 fnal.
But as I sat in the Super Dome I knew what was going to happen.
That was back in the day when it seemed we ALWAYS missed crucial free throws.
As depressing as it was (and the weather in New Orleans that night didn't help), I was prepared for it.
Same with the Ron Rowan jumper and Walter Berry's block on Pearl.

So, the one that hurt the most was the Larence Moten/Arkansas tournament game.
Especially because for the next week, people would come up to me at work and say, "time out."
We had that game WON!

Indiana is #1. Still hurts

Arkansas is #2. Game was over and the red sea had parted for a final four run.

Illinois in 89 was #3. We win the title that year as well if we win that game.

All others need not apply.
Oooh, Arkansas. Good call. That's probably #1 for me, since I was only 6 when Indiana happened so I don't have any recollection.
