Maybe it was just tonight, but this didn’t seem like usual Dino tempo especially compared to year 1 and 2 where they literally tried to run a play it seemed like every 8-12 seconds. Seemed like there were some serious opportunities to do that this game. Last year I understand how potent the offense was, but last year seemed where the slow down started where the QB gets under center quickly to eliminate possible substitution for the defense, but then being “methodical” after that... I loved the hyper speed and seeing teams literally getting worn down from the pace and this isn’t a complaint Bc I think this team is special, just wondering if anyone else is with me as I love the insight always on this board ...

They adjusted to starting under center to get a read on the defense.
The defense Liberty was running, cover 3 I think (I might be wrong), was something the offense had not seen or prepared for.
So we had to slow the game done to audible, the heat was pretty intense from all reports, and why not grind it out a bit more to really tire out the defense.

This is new territory for Dino. I dont think he has ever had a defense and special teams combination this good as a head coach. Until the offense clicks he should play to our strengths. Going fast when your out of control usually leads to an accident.

I think that we took what was given. We knew nothing about Liberty, really. I think they were expecting us to pass all game long because of our receivers. I think Babers planned on running the ball until they could stop it and they couldn't. That gave our D a chance to rest. There was no up tempo because we did not need it. Why show our hand until we need to. That will come starting next week maybe. The play book will be opened as the season progresses.

The offense needs to be clicking and playing the tempo before we push it.

This group will grow, not worried.

Yep and we can also ask as the OP asked..."Where's the Beef?" The OL has to push these guys around more than they did on Saturday, while that said...TD and his receivers have to be on the same page as well, have to connect on those short throws 70% or better.

I think we'll see more tempo next week. I think Dino wanted to get TD comfortable and he said before and after the game that they had to make a ton of adjustments on the fly since they didn't have film on Liberty. No need to make the new starting QB feel rushed if he's already uncomfortable with what he's seeing. There's also no need to show Maryland what TD looks like with the offense at full tempo. It'll be interesting to see whether the coaches think they need to go hyper speed against Maryland or save it for Clemson. Or maybe they want to get some live reps at speed in preparation for Clemson, as long as they think we can execute it well against Maryland. It would be cool tombe a fly on the wall in tye gameplan meetings.

We played to our strength by shortening the game and keeping our D fresh. I expect the same next week.
The team with more talent wants more possessions, thereby reducing the role that random chance plays in deciding the game.

Also, the team is designed for high possessions on the theory that our defense is conditioned for it, but theirs isn’t.

I think the more likely answer is that we were playing a team that we were going to beat, and (A) it wasn’t worth the risk of added injuries and (B) we’re probably naturally slower early in the year (team is still getting used to each other/the system).

Regardless, and maybe to your sentiment, I’d rather see a good offense than a fast offense, regardless of the strategy.

We’ve seen fast offenses under Dino, but I’m not sure we’ve seen really good ones (probably better than average, but nothing great). However, I think we will see something really great before TD leaves.

In the past this was considered Meathead coaching. I guess it’s back in style and cool as long as HCDB is doing it.

* I don’t disagree with it by the way. I just want to win and this was how we won.

I don't love it. I think it is meathead.

That said, part of the virtue of Babers seems to be that he's selectively meatheaded, not meathead by default.

Completely agree, couldn’t have said it better.

Really? Why have we not consistently slowed the game down under Dino when we've played more talented teams?

These days in college football the “vanilla” gamelan is uptempo. I feel like the majority of P5 programs are doing the uptempo spread (maybe excluding the b1g). Perhaps the system changed to throttling tempo and more ball control?
